My idea of punk is also mostly the bands that came out at about the same time between '75 & '78. I've heard about Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Suicidal tendencis but not familiar with them, so I'll have to check them out.

I love Husker Du but have never consider them as a"punk" band. Rancid on the other hand I do as they definitely took their cues from the UK 70's punk movement, especially early Clash.

Ian, I am glad someone else here knows The Saints. Anyone interested in punk should at least check out the 2 links I posted on page 1. By their 3rd album, Prehistoric Sounds, recorded less than 2 years after their 1st, they had moved onto sort of jazzy, punkish R&B where horns featured extensively. Quite an amazing change in such a short period of time. I find it difficult to describe but it worked brilliantly. The 1st 2 albums can definitely be classified as punk. The band changed considerably when guitarist Ed Kuepper left after the 3d album, though still had some good moments over the years. All I know is that more than half of the crowd at the 80's punk shows I went to had spiked mohawks, combat boots, leather, spikes and smelled of aqua net and clove cigarettes...

So, I guess I must have been fooled... We called it punk, but I suppose it wasn't

I do remember one skinhead trying to pick a fight with me telling me that punk was dead and why I was trying to look punk...

At one of the DC DK shows, Jello Biafra dived out into the audinence to contront a skin head who just threw a bottle at him... They started their set with Nazi Punks [••••] Off... what a sight that was to see.. I was up in the balcony making out with some chick...

@ Zelja. Cheers mate, the Saints were a great band. "Eternally Yours" is still a brilliant album and was the first one of theirs I got into. After that I picked up their first one, and the only later one I have is "Prodigal Son". I'll keep an eye open for their third one, but this stuff isn't as easy to find as it used to be.....

Shall we discuss the Hoodoo Guru's next ?

Cheers, Ian

Yeah, I love "Eternally Yours" (the 2nd album) as well, but "Prehistoric Sounds" is just so different sounding to anything else. "I'm Stranded" is possibly the most ferocious album I have in a way, though has got some great pseudo ballads on it as well (""Messin' With The Kid" & "Story of Love"). All 3 albums and a few singles inluding a version of "River Deep Mountain High" are on a 2 x CD compilation album called "Wild About You", released by Ravon Records. I do like a lot of their later stuff too, more pop/rock though. "Monkey Puzzle" has some great tracks on it & the song "Follow The Leader" of "Casablanca" is one of my favourites.

Yeah,we can discuss The Hoodoo Guru's next, or Radio Birdman, or Straitjacket Fits or The Mutton Birds or The Chills or...

Hello lads... Well, my husband Henry (of Stiff Little Fingers fame), ended up joining the dark side (he bought a Martin)... but that doesn't change the fact that my Guild D35 was played on his recent CD release! So take THAT martin!

I think the only reason he bought a Martin was because I don't like them... as a true "punk" has has to always take the "contrary" position on everything!

He's going to be touring the UK again this summer (from June through September) for any of our UK punk fans who want to catch up with him!

Just saw an update on Facebook from SLF about Henry Cluney (if anyone's interested):

"Stiff Little Fingers-
Some of you are already aware that we got some news yesterday regarding our old friend and bandmate, Henry Cluney. Henry is to undergo an operation today to remove a brain tumour. All our thoughts are with him and his wife, Carol* at this time. We're sure you all wish him well as well. Get well soon, mate !"

Good luck.
