I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I'm pretty new to LTG. I've got a '77 D-40 and '96 D-25. Neither have strap buttons on neck. I've been using leather loop strap attachment above nut but don't like it. I'll probably put strap buttons on both guitars, but wondering why Guild doesn't put them on at factory.

There is some personal preference to strap button location. And it's only been in recent years that I've seen some companies adding buttons to the bass side of the body by the neck.

First, welcome to LTG!

When I first bought my D25, I also tried attaching the strap at the head. As you found, it didn't feel right.
I bought a strap button, drilled a hole at the base of the neck and screwed it on. It's worked perfectly for 40 years.
