So most players don't want a combo of neck/mid/bridge (all three)?
On vintage 3 pickup guitars like the X-350 you had those combinations, but no 3 pickup combinations:

The Stratocaster ultra luxe I posted has an S1 switch in the volume knob that adds the neck pickup to either position, giving you all three single coils in position 2 if you want. I personally love the option for all 3, and quite frankly the guitar in general. And by the way, Fender knocked it out of the park with that model, oooh baby!

I think the 5-way blade switch is more convenient than 3 toggles, but my favorite sound on my Surfliner is from the neck/bridge pickup combination. If the Surfliner Deluxe uses the middle position for the middle pickup, I might just need to rewire it. I don't mess with Mr. In-Between.

Just swap the hot of the bridge and middle PUPs on the switch. That gives you neck, neck & bridge, bridge, bridge & middle, middle.

Other Surfliner configurations had push/pull pots for the humbucker, seems possible that this would too? Then the 5-way switch actually has more possibilities.

Interesting discussion on the 5-way switch, guys! I'm just speaking from complete ignorance, but combining a blender knob or push-pull switch with a 5-position switch seems way more complicated/confusing than using 3 on/off rocker switches. But, again, I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to this stuff. I think I'm just going to have to try this out some day.

It's funny having a discussion like this when (with acoustics) all you really have are strings to discuss to change a guitar's tone! :D

Yeah Ralf.
It’s a nice little touch that adds a lot.

Unlike the truss rod cover 😏

Traditional 5-way strat wiring would be
neck
neck/middle
middle
middle/bridge
bridge

with 1 being the "bluze solo" setting, 2 and 4 being the 'nasal' settings, 3 being the "Jerry" setting, and 5 being the "Dick Dale" setting. The two combinations you can't get are neck/bridge and all three. Both of which are, non-essential, IMHO.
Best description I have seen. I would call pos. 4 the “duck” setting.

Now you know why some basses have one pickup and two knobs and the tone knob could be replaced with a toggle that was "full on" or "full off" if things are not simple enough. In my case that keeps me from overthinking the controls and, should I want more tonal variety, justifies possession of more than one bass :)

On my X-375 you can push 2 buttons down pretty easily and 3 buttons down with slightly more pressure. You "can" do 4 at times but it's tricky and probably not designed to hold 4 in "down position".

I'm almost sure it was engineered that way and not an accident.

So you can activate all 3 pickups quite a few ways, there's just no "1 button" activation of all 3.
