Had the opportunity to do a side by side comparison of my F512 with a friends F50R. Mine is a '84, his is a '78. The F50R has been played heavily over the years, and does show some wear. I still think the original owner of my F512 only took it out of the case once in a while to wipe it down, then quickly put it back up again. But I was a little suprised how different they looked being only 6 years apart. My top is significantly lighter than his, and the ebony is quite different as well. The ebony on the F50R is jet black, while it's a bit lighter on the F512. I've read some comments on here about striped ebony. Maybe that's what I have. Or it may just need a little oil, which I plan to remedy at the next string change.

Anyway, take a look and see what you think.

Also, my F512 has a mahogany neck, and I belive the F50R has a padauk neck. I was disapointed in some of the pictures I tried to take of the necks. Most of them just didn't show the difference very clearly. In person it is much more obvious. Probably just my cheap camera. Every time I save up for a nicer one, I end up buying another guitar.

Chances are the F50R has spent a lot more time out of the case in sunlight. The sun will darken any finish and is especially visible on the light-colored spruce top.

The picture sure fits the category though, doesn't it.

Only if your tastes run that way TMG.

Personally, I prefer women that aren't fighting the effects of gravity all the time.

That's what I was thinking. My D25 is downright amber now, but the D40 still looks new, and it's virtually never been outside. They look just like Cashdog's photo when they're next to each other.

Hello Mark,

Looked at the photos but I'm afraid the resolution is not high enough to see the difference. At first sight they both look like mahogany to me. I may be wrong though.

Here's a clear photo that should give you an idea what a Padouk neck can look like:

Does the wood on the F-50R looks anything like that?

Sincerely,

Phew - from the heading I was expecting this old picture again

Thanks guys. Figured I'd draw some interest with that heading.

I believe you're probably right drive-south. The F50R has certainly seen much heavier use. I really like the amber color, but sure appreciate how careful the original owner of my F512 was with it.

Hans - Judging from your photo, I don't believe the neck on the F50R is Padouk. It's darker than the mahogany neck on the 512, and the grain doesn't show up much. Maybe they just used a darker stain that hides more of the grain.

My buddy is really more of a Martin guy, and he hasn't had this one for too long. This weekend was the first time he showed a little weakness when I pressured him about selling it to me. It has definitely been a players guitar, but man does it sound sweet. Keep your fingers crossed. I may get to bring it into the fold one day soon.
