I swear, from my lips to God's ears, that the story I’m about to tell you is true.

I bought a new/old Guild at the end of last week. It was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, but of course it didn’t show up at 10 a.m. or at 11 or at 12:30. I was being driven to distraction! You know the how it is when you’ve got one “out for delivery.”

I tried to concentrate on work and put the guitar out of my mind.

So at around 3:30 in the afternoon I'm sitting at my desk, doing some reading, with my iTunes on random shuffle - as is my habit. I admit that I was spinning a playlist that only had 900 songs on it, but suddenly "Rebel Rouser" by Duane Eddy comes on the speakers. I think to myself, "Wouldn't it be funny if...," and I turn to take a glance out the window. As I do, the big brown truck pulls up to deliver the guitar which, I can only assume, has conspired with all the forces of the universe to cause my machine to play a most appropriate fanfare!

The guitar actually telegraphed its arrival from all the way down the street!

Could I possibly make that up??!? I suppose I could, but I didn't.

From that moment on, everything - and I mean everything - has been magic. The guitar is absolutely gorgeous in every possible way. The neck is straight and true, the wiring is perfect, the pickups are fantastic, the feel is to die for.

I went to work cleaning it and restringing it and the guitar behaved like a well-trained stallion. Even though I dreaded the idea of attempting to intonate it, the guitar snapped to attention and it took maybe two moves to get it good.

Sadly, a '63 DE-400 is not inexpensive, so I am probably going to have to sell some things - including a Guild Starfire 4 from 1980 and a Westerly Blues 90 - just to be able to justify buying it. Feel free to PM me if there's any interest out there for one (or both!) of those.

That is a great looking guitar, BB, and a great story!

Photos and details of the two guitars for sale would be welcome!

First of all - Beautiful Guitar!
I totally understand where you're coming from. I've got my eye on an old Guild and I'm probably going to have to part with one of my other ones to feel at ease about the purchase of my current muse. Which incidently is going to need some work but I'm psyched up for bring the ol' girl back to life. Don't want to spoil it yet so I'm keeping zipped at the moment.

But the DE looks awesome and I would surely be proud to own it. Nice score.

Nice catch! What do those Dearmonds sound like to compared to other Guild PUs like the Franz, HB-1 & Mini-hum?

Beautiful DE-400!

Having played your Starfire 4 and your Blues 90, I'm confident you'll have no problems selling those guitars.

Congrats on the great score Peter. Those DEs are really sweet. I hope my old Blues 90 can stay here in the family; it's a good one.

Hey everybody (Scott, Kenny, Sandy, etc., et al) - thanks for all the compliments and kind words!

I also want to publicly thank the very venerable Hans M. for his terrific advice and guidance throughout the purchasing process. It'll come as no surprise to anyone here that his help was invaluable and he gave me the confidence to take the plunge.

I wish I could give you a good comparison to the Franz or the Guild mini-hums, but my experience with those is too limited to comment intelligently. The DeArmonds are very different to anything else I have except perhaps for some TV Jones Classics in another semi-hollow. They are single-coil all the way and are very old-school in the sense that they sound like the best rockabilliy records from the late 50s, bright and twangy and certainly very Gretsch-y. But there's also quite a broad range of sounds between the three positions. There's plenty of jazz and blues tones in the neck pickup, then switch to the bridge pup and add some overdrive, and it's pure Dave Davies from 1964!

It's probably more appropriate for me to create some actual ads and put 'em in the For Sale section than take up space here to discuss guitar sales, so I'll do that. Of course I should also take a crack at selling these guitars locally to avoid all the hassles of shipping, etc. But if you're really hot for something just get in touch privately.

In the meantime, here's another full body shot:

Yeah, what is it about Guilds?? Shortly after I was married, I had sold a birth year strat. Spent the last 10 years trying to get it back. I finally got it back this year, and - yes, you guessed it - sold it to fund a Guild hollow body.

I was really really attached to that guitar!!! But I could not stand up to the Guild. :)

Hans informs me that the most common finish for this model would be the Sunburst, followed by mine, with the rarest finish being the blonde. I'm happiest to have the Cherry. I love the color combo of red, black, and the white of the pickup covers - accented by the gold lettering on the pickguard.

The guitar is tremendously appealing. I really do have trouble putting it back on its stand!
