... as I remember the one I had (not the 6V6 variety, btw) as not very loud, and having fairly early breakup. I think the stock speaker in it was wimpy ... and not efficient at all compared to that Eminence, so that probably limited the headroom of the amp severely. I understand the pedal bit though, as I remember it as fairly bland and not very interesting sounding.
Paul said the Eminence speaker was new and, if so, would need another 5-10 hours to loosen the cone up; to my ear, that's what I think I was listening to; a speaker that hadn't come to life yet. He's nuts about it because he isn't looking for a stand-alone amp to either gig or practice with; the Power of the Pedal - he has a very good ear and his pedals morph the output. He also goes through amps like you and I go through clean socks; he told me he bought a sold a RI Bassman and Fender RI something else within the last six months. No; the 6AQ5 / wimpy speaker is not an appealing prospect! J

Mixed blessing - one of my friends is a vintage guitar/amp dealer, and the things he's dragged to my house....
I remember playing several blackguard telecasters, a '59 Super 400, a mid 50's L5CEs, a '59 6120, all in my own couch. Sometimes, after he leaves, my own gear seems...well....so "normal"...

I've played a very nice white tolex/brownface twin at his place once too, the rockabilly amp of DOOM as far as I'm concerned! And I thought I didn't like twins!

That early, really, really, really dirty breakup sound eerily familiar. I think my speaker may be the problem since I'm juicing NOS tubes. It doesn't sound like a fart in a cardboard box, but it could tighten up a bit. I've got a couple of Vintage 30s just hanging out, and it's 8 ohm...

Edit: By the way, I've been told that the one with the slider switch is the later model of the two...

Hi Dane: do you think your speaker is original; does it have EIA codes on it? 8 ohms. Does that mean yours has a toggle switch? CJ

Another early 70s Musicmaster Here on eBay. Looks like a 6AQ5 model; tubes a little skinny to be 6V6s.

Threw one of the V-30s into the Musicmaster Bass Amp about a week and a half ago. I can't believe how much better it makes the amp sound. Everything fell into place tone-wise as soon as I popped it in. The speaker has been used a bit, so it has been broken in. After this experiment, I think I can justify replacing a few other speakers.

I've been playing punk and heavy/classic rock live off and on for about 8 years now without ever playing without a pedal. We played a show a week ago with the Goddamn Gallows from Michigan and I used nothing but my red S-100 with the tone controls bypassed and the Musicmaster Bass Amp. I don't think I'll need my pedals anymore as long as I can hear that thing on stage.

Hi Dane; gotta say I was surprised ... without techno break-dancing, I think a lot of it is that audio transformer acting as the phase inverter in addition to a good grade speaker. The amp stayed in Fender's catalog for nearly 12 years. J
