As often happens, Coastie drives me to look up something in Whackypedia. This is what I found.

Original:
"Is This the Way to Amarillo"
You only need to see a few seconds of this. Is disgusting. Like eating an armadillo.

Nice suit though. And teeth. And hair.

Woulda looked even better if he'd worn a Newsyland rugby helmet !

Actually, I believe it's a charango, sort of an Andes uke. Traditionally, the back is made from an armadillo.

How do you know these things before consulting Wikipedia?

Hi Fro,

There is quite a bit of interest in South American music in the CA Central Valley. During the years I was president of the Fresno Folklore Society (1983-88) and years following we had multiple concerts by groups like Markahuasi De Peru and Juanita Y Nayo Ulloa as well as others. Some of Markahuasi's commercial recordings were made here. Also during those years we had a series of yearly Memorial Day Weekend campout/folk festivals at the Peckinpah ranchero east of Fresno. We attracted all kinds of musicians from all over and there were always a few charango players.

So that's how I knew what it was before I saw the Wiki article. I looked it up on the computer because I wasn't sure I had the spelling right.

Peace and joy,

Well yes, a Tiple has 10 strings. But so does the charango.

Although the original photo has 12 pegs, it's hard to tell if all have strings. It looks to me like only 10 are strung. The center ones look empty.

I believe you're right, Kurt. I see 5 courses of double strings on the charango, 4 courses of double or triple strings on the tiple.

Thanks! And this just goes to show that even a veer can lead to useful results and information.

Armadillo body... I can believe that. Does that imply it has gut strings (look like steel.. hmmm) Maybe the missing two central strings are made from the hiccup.
