I browsed through Willie's Guitars in St. Paul today, and despite all the vintage Fenders, Gibsons, Guilds (sorry, nothing to write to the LTG about) and Gretsches, the only thing that intriged me was a pair of 60s Epiphone Coronets and a Fender Rattlecan Jr., a limited edition love child of a Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul Jr.
The Rattlecan had a mahogany Strat body, bolt-on maple neck and six-on-a-side tuners with Gibsonesque appointments: single P-90 pickup, wrap-around bridge, tortoise pickguard and amber knobs. They wanted $995 for it, and there's a similiarly priced green one and red one at Elderly Instruments.
In terms of pickguard shape, the Rattlecan apparently drew inspiration from the Coronets, a '61 with the 3+3 headstock and a '65 with the batwing, 6-on-a-side headstock. Of course, both of the Epiphones were two and three times the price of the Rattlecan because they were vintage and made in Kalamazoo.
