I don't know Sandy. I'll have to admit that I keep up with them much anymore. Pretty guitar .....I just can't get the tuners to grow on me though.

I think it was, though someone here might correct me. You don't like those tuners? I don't really like the gold, but I've come to love open back tuners. They're not at all like the open back tuners of yore, and they do lighten up the guitar some as well.

I meant to say that "I don't keep up with them much anymore". Sorry about that. As far as the tuners are concerned, obviously very subjective, but when I bought my first Guild (D25) in '79, it was about the bottom of the "appointments" scale. The D25 is a pretty basic guitar in my view (not be be confused with a low quality guitar), and along with those basic appointments were open back tuners. In order to graduate to closed machine heads, you had to buy the next more expensive Guild as I recall. To me tuners, and tuning button add a certain amount of majesty to a guitar, and open back tuners I still associate with less expensive guitars. I'm still trying to figure out if those tuning buttons look like a Tums pill or what. Let the lambasting begin. :)

Having said that, I have seen Waverly open back tuners that were ridiculously expensive..........like $700/set or something, and I've seen open backs on several expensive guitars.......I just don't personally care for them.....or for the Tums pills.

OK, fire away  .

BTW, that koa guitar is truly beautiful.

Personally I'm with you. I'm just convinced closed machines are going to prove to be the most maintenance-free in the long haul, so it's more of a practicality issue for me than anything else. It's been my only turn-off about the NH instruments, and I really don't like the idea of replacing tuners on a new guitar, or changing the factory stock instrument.

Imagine how much prettier that headstock would be if they just put a plain gold set on Grovers on it. In my opinion that would look fabulous against that koa headstock.....great match for the wood.....those white platic things just don't work for me.

Would it make you feel any better if those "Tums pills" have little G Shield logos on them? These are the same machines they use on all the GSR models, and believe me; they're very nice. Like I said the open back tuners they make these days are really nice; nothing like those of the bad old days.

I have Waverlys on my Martin and Collings, and they're also very nice, though probably not worth the price premium over the Gotohs that come on Guilds these days. Didn't have any choice in the matter though. That's the way they came!

It sure is! I seem to remember one of our members posting a pic of the guitar after they made the trip to NAMM. Maybe someone will chime in.

Sorry Sandy, the wood on this guitar is beautiful, but the open backs will never do it for me. :) You tried, and I appreciate your love for them, they just don't do it for me.

Nice guitar ! Lovely guitar, in fact !

I have to say that I ( wrongly ) tend to associate open-back tuners with low-order guitars too.

But, I think those tuners look very nice on there; they kinda lighten up the look somehow.

BUT !! It's just plain WRONG that the G shields on the tuner buttons are upside-down !! And, couldn't they have given them a slightly "aged" look ?

Hey, to each his own. What do I know about tuners? I want the POS OEM tuners back for my X175 that I replaced with Schallers and threw away!

I agree they shoul be dipped in coffee and switched to the other side. Steffan

Visually they're actually quite pretty, and if you're careful you can probably string it so the G-shields will be right side up from the front, and I'm sure they're quite durable and the buttons will yellow up nicely in just a couple of years. I just don't wanna have to worry about cleaning the little suckers.

I'm in the open back camp with Sandy. Maybe it's nostalgia; heck, I dunno, but the open backs on my Tacoma-built Guilds are top drawer; nothing like those I had on an old, old Goya many moons ago... Odd as it may sound, I think I prefer them to closed tuners. I keep a li'l oil dropper in the gig bag and put just a touch on the gears every now and then.

Thanks, Ken. Nice to know it's not just me. I really like the simplicity of them, and their light weight. And the fact that they work better than their predecessors. 8)

Open back for me too !! I like the fact I can fix them if they go wrong rather than the sealed ones which are a throw away and replace job. I use grease on mine which seems to keep the action nice.

You guys must have a lot more trouble with tuners than I do. I guess I've had about a dozen Guild guitars and never changed one....never had to. I had a screw get loose on one one time. :) Been accused of having that happen to myself though.

One of twenty being made?

Good luck!

Do you have a line on one?

Seems like a really neat Guild. I like koa. 8)

For what Its worth, ( and that aint worth much) I too like the open back tuners..TODAYS quality, with an air of yesteryear about them...particularly in silver. When I first recieved my DV52, I was serious about changing over the tuners to open backs, or at least rubbing the gold off them ( I dont really like the 'gold ' tuners much either, again Just ME, Im a silver kind of guy...even my wedding ring is 'white gold') Treem talked me out of it ,( or at least..made me THINK about it again) and generally ( whilst i still PREFER" silver) Ive gotten used to the gold tuners,( well, sort of...I MIGHT still rub the gold off them, to get that "dull silver look") and I see the sence in leaving things as stock original as they came.
There is NO WAY id replace the tuners and leave NEW holes in the guitar, just out of aesthetics.
I REALLY like the aged silver look. Silver that has a bit of a dull, worn look about it. Not the shiney NEWchrome look. Twocorgis has a Martin with Waverly butterbeans on her..THOSE are the tuners I LIKE!! SO much so, that i "MAY" actually "AGE" my Gotohs ( on my GAD30) in such a fashon ( a bit of gentle steel wool will do the trick :D )
Like anything.......we all have our personal tastes to appease. no real absolutes in it.
