I have Atmos in my home theater. What sort of opinions are you looking for?

Is Atmos essentially an advanced "surround sound" system? How does it sound if you are just listening to an "album," so to speak, and not a movie? I saw a piece on it on T.V. last night, but was I a bit concerned that the system would split up the sound of different instruments in a group in a very unnatural way. For example, the piece mentioned how a trombone in a recording they used sounded as if it were revolving around the ceiling. What would, for example, Tommy Dorsey think about that? Would he want his sound to revolve around the ceiling? They used Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as an example; I could see how that might sound pretty cool (especially if you were in a chemically altered state !), but that's a radically different genre from big band or hard bop jazz. I'm no audiophile, so was just curious how this sytem sounded to folks who actually have it.

I think atmos is primarily for home theater. We have a receiver that can do it but we currently only have it set up as a 3.1 system. The center channel is great for movie dialogue and I’ll eventually get two ceiling speakers for surround sound but without a dedicated and big room I don’t think atmos would add enough to justify the extra speakers.

My home theater is capable of Dolby Atmos, but my room doesn't have a high enough ceiling for the layers. And I've hidden all the wiring for the 7.2 PSB/SVS speakers, so it will stay that way. Hard to imagine it sounding much better than it does now anyway.

IMO Atmos for music *could* be interesting but I’d say mostly for simulating a live concert.
