The wife was flipping channels last night and as she went by PBS 9, there was this guy doing crazy things to an acoustic guitar. I made her stop and go back.
Interesting world. Turn over another rock and there's another scary guitar player you didn't know about who's been sitting there woodshedding. I had no idea who this guy was until the fund raising break. Tommy Emmanuel! Never heard of him.
I might be right in saying that what he was doing was more entertaining than playing - the brightly colored smoke and shiny mirrors of grandstanding - cheesy showoff stuff - racing all over the fretboard - playing to the side of the toast that is buttered - but I am absolutely right in saying that that I would be an idiot to say that he can't play or that what was beneath all the smoke was not entirely solid. Very high speed playing with very clean articulation given the speed of execution and the strength of the attack. What I saw him play was a kind of stylistically mixed thing with his single note soloing being a bit like Django Reinhardt on steroids and amphetamines but without Django's swing.
Very, very, very scary, boys and girls: http://www.tommyemmanuel.com/
I would probably go see him if he came here. Scary technique.
