Never even heard of the Shins, but I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. I received a link of the Shin's doing a cover of Floyd's "Breathe" so I thought I would check it out. They did a really good job. And the lead singer is playing what looks like an older Starfire (not sure which model).

The Shins playing:
Pink Floyd's Breathe

Enjoy.

That's a mid-'60s Starfire IV.

Sincerely,

Thanks Hans for pointing that out. I am a neophyte when it comes to the Starfires, but I have decided it will be my next guitar. In fact, the SF-IV is probably the one I will be looking for.

Very fine band - I started with their album, Chutes Too Narrow, then picked up their other two, Oh, Inverted World and Wincing the Night Away, and then got my then late-teen daughters listening to them.

It really bugs them when their old geezer of a dad finds cooler music than they do.

First heard them on a Philly alternative FM station, WXPN (http://www.wxpn.org) - a great place to hear music you might not otherwise hear. Just check out upcoming guests on David Dye's World Cafe program.

+1 on XPN. It's the only on-air source in the Philly area for music that hasn't been played to death. Sometimes it's too mellow for me, but it's possible that I'm not listening at the right time. Sometimes I want to hear a Husqvarna chainsaw plugged into a Marshall stack.

Same here in New York with WFUV. The only station worth a damn in the wasteland that is New York radio. I've been a member for many years.

Check out Land of the Lost on XPN (http://www.xpn.org/xpn-programs/land-of-the-lost). I've heard some pretty obscure stuff with bloody huge Marshall amps cranked up way beyond 11.

Since I love pictures, here is a very recent picture (from 9/25/11) of James Mercer of The Shines with this nice Emerald Green maple Starfire IV. Note the neck joint at the 16th fret. The guitar seems to be in great shape.
