I feel for you, man.

My new CT Guilds are sweet and if anything had happened to them I would be pretty bummed out!

Here are the sisters, both from 2010!

Well she is going back. I think in the end it became a matter of comfort. We would have been uncomfortable with this guitar should anything else have gone wrong with it. We will begin our hunt again.

Yes, you would be bummed out now, but what if you had opened
the case for the first time and found one all hacked up?
Would you have taken delivery on it or insisted on another one?

Jazzmang,

I am sorry I didn't comment earlier those are stunning guitars. I have been wrapped up in this thing for 2 weeks now. I am hoping the dealer can get us a brand new one next week. We will see.

HOLY BAT SH*T, MAN!!!

Anybody see what the MSRP on a D-55 is?
Why was there ever even a question about sending it back?

Damn, that's what I spent on my last three cars......

It's definitely high, Scott, but that's what all the competition has done recently too.

I hope nobody's paying the MAP price around here. You need to talk with your bricks-and-mortar local dealers or your contacts here and negotiate a price.

Ok,

Guild/Fender and the dealer are all on notice and the new D55 is at the dealer and will be opened Tuesday. It then goes over to the Luthier and is checked out again and the setup is tweaked or not. Assuming all is well, it will then ship to us. Keep your fingers crossed! Once the damaged guitar was out of my hands and my head cleared I realized there is not excuse for the problems we had and they should be made right. I believe they are trying to do it. Time will tell.

Agreed. IMHO, you should pay no more than about 2/3rds of MSRP for a new instrument. Take that MSRP, mutiply by 0.66, and start negotiating from there.

But don't you think the new Guilds are actually priced lower than other comparable USA-made acoustics?

Hi SS: if you get the chance, you might ask them about a class of shipping service above UPS Ground ... they call it ground because they tie your parcel to the bumper and drag it along the ground behind the truck. Time doesn't allow dredging up all the bad-mouthing here about UPS ... and ... they don't pay claims. But if they ask for an upcharge, it's just another form of insurance you might want to think about.

Yes; you ought not to have to pay more but you said you'd suspected that the going-back guitar had a shipping ding; I can't speak for you but if I had put down that much money on a new guitar and the only issue was a shipping ding, I'd be just as annoyed as you were even if there hadn't been any other workmanship issues. Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning; good luck and I think Fender/Guild, under the circumstances, has handled itself as they're supposed to ... assuming of course that the replacement guitar is all that you hoped the first one would be. The New Guild D55 has finish cracks. Wow just wow. I am at a total loss. Can Guild be on the verge.

The cold weather is a killer. I bought a GSR F-40 from a shop in NYC. It shipped on a week where the *high* was like 20 degrees F.
Needless to say, by the time UPS got it here (via Ground, took one week), it had nitro bubbles along the fret ends of the fretboard. I had to send it back and wait for another one.

Because of this, my new rule in cold weather is this:

If you can overnight it, do it. It will save you a lot of headaches.
If you can't overnight it, don't buy it now. Wait 'til its warmer!

EDIT/ADD: I'd like to add that I ordered a guitar from our friendly dealer, Bing, who lives in Montana. Bing was appreciably knowledgeable and wise enough to make sure the weather was tolerable for the guitar before he shipped it out. It probably saved me a big headache.

Tell us more about the shipping profile, and how it was handled when you received it.

Man, I'm in Connecticut and I can tell you it's been bitterly cold for days and days. So I can't imagine why anyone would think that it would be a good idea to ship a guitar unless it was being overnighted.

Funny thing is that I looked at one of the older UPS tracking labels on my shipping box. Guild overnighted it to the dealer from CT.
I'm sure they are fully aware of the dangers in shipping in cold weather and I hope that they try to combat it by shipping guitars overnight to their dealers.

Of course I have a sample size of just one box, so obviously I could be making a blanket statement.
