Howdy everyone! Over the weekend I acquired this Starfire III, wondering if anyone can help with a production date, SN is: AG300373

Also wondering what strings came on these from the factory and what folks prefer to run these days.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to LTG! That is one clean machine! Very nice! The serial number makes her a 1997 made one.

From the 1997 catalog:

Today Guild ships the Korean made new model with D'Addario EXL115 Nickel Wound, Medium (.011 - .049) strings.

Here is an excellent write-up from our forum owner GAD:

The string topic is always a topic of personal taste, here was a previous discussion:

Congratulations, and welcome to LTG. Yours is a near twin to my Starfire II, serial number AG300434, which is from 1997. That was a great year in Westerly!

As for stings? I have mine strung with D'Addario XL 11-49 at the present time, but I'm not much of a six string electric player. Main reason I bought this one was the price was right, and it was so damn pretty!

Welcome to LTG and congrats on your SF-II! It's a beauty! I have one like it and the mahogany body really gives it a sweet sound. I use nickel plated 11s on it. Enjoy!

Very cool to see a SN so close, I really got lucky to walk into this guitar. The gent that sold it to me is a friend of my dad, he’s getting older and looking to unload some of his collection. I was on the market for a 335 and when I played this it fit the bill nicely. I typically like DR Blues strings on my LP, but I’ve heard that they don’t handle the Bigsby well so I went with these D’addario NYXL 10-52, we’ll see how they workout, I’ve heard good things.

Just handed over the Starfire to my luthier for a setup. The strings were pretty nasty and overall the guitar needed a little cleanup. Looking forward to getting it back for some playtime. Thx for the strings suggestions!

Congratulations on a super guitar! I've only owned a 60s-era Starfire, but I've played plenty from the same production run as yours. They're great players.

Welcome to the forum!
