Most of the gang resides in the living room, which is also the only place that I can have an amp that is out of site (wife's rules, it is behind the couch). However, the DV-52 has taken to living in the bedroom where it is played without benefit of guitar picks before turning in (and yes, she likes that!).

I live in a townhouse that has no basement, with my wife and our two kids—a 6 y.o. and a 3 y.o. Our garage is basically a room in the house on the first floor; the previous owners dry-walled and finished about two-thirds of it for a playroom for their kids. Its’ now filled with our kids’ toys along with a closet which I built into the corner to hold my photo and music gear. Because its previous life was a garage the walls are cinder blocks, the door is a fire door and there is no ductwork. After the kids are in bed around 9-ish I go in to play, as loud as I want acoustically or quietly with my Tele and amp. We’ll be house-hunting this time next year and one of my requirements while shopping will be a part of the basement that can be finished into a studio.

By the way, I finally acquired my first Guild—that story will be coming shortly.

So... there was this little Roland Micro Cube that showed up on Craigslist over the weekend, making it possible to play the X-175 anywhere in the house. It is now bossa nova at bedtime -- the DV-52 has moved back downstairs for a while.

Where to play

Personally, I have always favored the kitchen. Smithfield Fair has rehearsed in our kitchen most of its 18 years....specifically at the kitchen table. It's a good flat surface with room to spread out a wee bit if I'm working with music papers and writing or noting. It's near the refrigerator and it allows someone to work in the study at the computer without me flailing away in there and pacing around as I do so. ...and the acoustics are pretty good.

We did take in the carport in our wee hoose, but the study has turned into the band's office and there are so many distractions. O, the lasses gave me a nice padded and armless chair that I sit in, but I still gravitate to the kitchen. Also, if I'm making a demo I can spread out my little 4-track. If there's no one home, with our open floor plan from kitchen-dining room-den, I can wander as I play with ease and listen to the different sounds as I move around.

Weapon of choice...the '75 G-37...dream large...dbs
