UPDATE:

Finally got a chance to visit the woman in the music store who told me a few year ago about a custom case manufacturer. Turns out that she and her husband bought the case company, ran it for awhile, and sold the bits and pieces a year-and-a-half ago to a Vancouver guitar maker.

I've contacted the company to see if they still have the tooling/etc., and if they might be interested in an order for (say) 10 to 15 M-F20 cases. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you for the update John.

And thank you for your on-going effort.

FURTHER UPDATE: reply from potential source

Left a brief message on your answering machine, now “memory full”.

I’m a Guild guitar collector. Among my guitars are two small-body flattops, an M20 and an F20. It is impossible to find cases to fit these guitars. I am incontact with Guild aficionados around the world through an internet group – recently there has been a lot of discussion about finding a source for cases.

Shannon Toane told me a few years ago that she had a source who could build h/s cases to spec – I asked her again today, and she told me that she had in fact run a case business for a while, but has sold it to Sparrow. She suggested I contact you.

I can put together an order for at least 10 cases – high-quality, arched top, good hardware, etc. Any chance you might be able to help me out?

    Thanks for your consideration

Response last night:
  • John:

If we have a mold that can work for the body shape then it won't be a problem. I'll get on my computer and see what j can find out.

Folks: here are the specs I sent on from measuring my M20. Please check for variations with your guitars?

  • Billy:

Here are the measurements from a 1957 M20:
    [list:2faippqv]Length Overall: 38 ½”
    Body Length: 18”
    Neck/Headstock 20 ½”
    Bass Bout 13 ¾”
    Waist 8 ¼”
    Treble Bout 10 ¼”
    Body Depth (Neck) 3 ¼”
    Body Depth (bottom) 4”
There is some variation between models, say +/- ¼” on the body dimensions. It might be that a little extra padding would make a slightly oversized shell fit all?

Thanks again,
John[/list:u:2faippqv]

I note, for instance, that my '85 F20 has pretty much the same dimensions but has an arched back. Others?

My '93 F20 also has an arched back. I measured the depth at 4 1/4", 3 and change at the upper bout. Everything sounds just about right. Hope we can make this happen!

Thanks John. :D

Everything looks right for me except length which is 39 1/2" for me. Did you include the end pin?...I'd like to say I'm in but don't want to hex this...so I'll say keep me posted and it sure as heck looks interesting to me. joan

Hi Joan:

Thanks for the reminder. No, I didnt include the end pin in the overall dimensions - I'm assuming that there would be a notch in the padding to accommodate. If Billy thinks he's able to do it, we'll make sure to take account of that kind of detail.

Cheers

Update: Just remeasured the length of my F20 again, and came up with the same 39 1/2" as Joan.

I'm officially out of the case chase

My M20 is headed for a new home (and staying in the LTG family). Here's step one of preparing it for shipping. jm

What happened Joan?

After everything you went through to this point finding a case for it, I sure didn't think you'd sell it.

Actually I knew I was selling it (loved the guitar but just couldn't get comfortable playing it, my left wrist, then forearm, then shoulder got sore) and since it had a very long trip I wanted to send it in a case. After talking with a lot of shops that ship guitars without cases and checking online I did this
  • 1) wrapped guitar "mummy" style in bubble wrap with special attention to headstock
    2) put bubble wrapped guitar into gig bag with additional support under the neck
    3) put gig bag into triangle box with additional bubble wrap as needed
    4) sealed triangle box
    5) put crushed paper and bubble wrap in bottom of rectangular shipping box
    6) put triangle box inside rectangular box
    7) added additional crushed paper and bubble wrap on all sides and top to prevent triangle box from moving and to absorb hits along the way
    8) sealed shipping box
    9) marked with "up" arrows and fragile
    10) insured and sent it on its way
    11) continue to check tracking and anxiously await report of safe arrival
    ...need I mention prayer?
