Friend of mine owns this. Known him for 30 years. Under no circumstances whatsoever will he sell it. I'm working the leave it to me in the will angle. I love this bass.

Guild Pilot bass, 5 string? I tried the 4-stringer in Guitar Center (GC) back in the day. I make Nikki Sixx look like Jaco.

Nice. Pilot Pro 5? Ferrari Red?

@The Guilds of Grot can probably provide a better ID.

He has a 1994 Pro 5 but the control arrangement has changed. I'd guess "your" bass is slightly earlier.

Could be that the electronics in the two basses are different too (i.e., passive vs. active)

first one is a 80s Pilot SB-605, wit passive PUPS, maybe not original.
Grots one is a 94/95 Pilot Pro 5 with active EMG's and a BTC.

Bowdren's article says the SB-605 came with active EMGs in a J J configuration. It also notes that gold hardware was an option on several models.

I'm not going to have a strong opinion about active vs. passive or factory vs. modified on the basis of one picture :)

Pretty sure it is a passive configuration. Most active pickups don't have pole pieces, I think. Don't quote me 🤣👍🏻

Well, the 605 came with emg‘s that were active and had no pole pieces visible or with passive pups that also had no pole pieces. Idk if the dimarzio option was there too, but there have not been active pups with pole pieces back then.
