Hey guys, Karl here, I'm new and found the site via the Gretsch forum. I have this X160, dated somewhere around 93-94, the number HJ000310 didn't show on the record list I found. It's been on Ebay a couple times the last few weeks, but no action, not sure if it's my price or the economy...anyways it's a beautiful giuitar and sounds amazing, I've just had a long time and play it less every year, it should really go to someone who loves it more. My question is, what is this guitar really worth, and is it rare, as I've never seen another one for sale, in mags, or anywhere. I would love some feedback on this, as this is an excellent Westerly instrument, but I can't seem to get any bites on it. Thanks!

Hi,

The guitar in question was releaded by Guild as a lower priced X170T. They are more rare because they didn't sell as well as the X170 or X170T. They are very nice but have less pricier features: Chrome vs. Gold plating, unbound neck vs. bound neck, dot fret markers vs. block fret markers, wooden bridge vs. bigsby bridge (trem models). They came in beautiful finishes like Transparent Charcoal, Blond or Amber, Sunburst, Cherryburst. So the issue you are up against is the price of an X170 or X170T vs. your X160. Deprnding on the year these were know as a X160, X161 or X160T.

I own a Cherryburst finished one. Unless someone is really looking for one just like yours I would think your asking price would have to be $1100 US max. I saw a Charcoal one sell a few months ago on the used equipment page of Guitar Center for $1100. It was listed at that price for around 6 months before it sold.

I think Matsickma has it about right, $1100 is closer to the mark. $1400 probably would have moved it a few years ago, but sadly (for sellers), the price of most used instruments has fallen over the last year or two in the US. Due to a poor economy more instruments are coming up for sale just as potential buyers are struggling financially.

The 160s are great guitars and as you pointed out, the sunbursts of that era were extremely well done.

It would help if you put the tone pots and pick guard back on the guitar. People think twice when they're spending over a grand on an instrument they have to put back together. It's more appealing if it's as original as possible and you can assure a buyer that it's ready to "plug & play".

Good luck with your sale!

I have one, and only paid $900, But that was a few years ago. It is a really great guitar. Mine sports a Benedetto pick-up in the neck position. Which likely lowered the price. But the Guild Humbucker was in the case, so I didn't mind.

The Blue Book of Electric Guitars 12th ed. lists the x160 at $900 to $1,025 in excellent condition. They don't have a separate entry for the X161.

Depends on the buyer. I've seen X170Ts go for $1200 so I'd probably say $900 US for a mint X160 Savoy, but that's me.

I'm with GAD. I recently sold an absolutely mint 2001 X-170 with an equally mint case, all original with no repairs ever having been needed, and I got $1285 on Ebay with a few relists needed. Looking at recent Ebay history the only X-170 that sold was a 1978 for $1625, yet two newer models for $1275 and $1399 did not sell initially, and an X-175 (comparable to the X-500 but with chrome instead of gold hardware) did not sell for $1275. Your X-160 looks very nice and would probably do well in the $900 to $1000 range, but it would not suprise me if it got a little more. Timing is everything with guitars like yours. Best of luck!

Hey guys, thanks for all of your expert advice, really appreciated! I took a few months off after some time of aggressive listing, so I thought fall would work to put it back out there...if anyone is interested, drop me a line...I've listed it for $1200 locally (to keep out the tirekickers) but if someone on here wants it for 1g we could work something out. Thanks again for the advice, and cheers!
