Well I know some are wondering about what that means for Guild instruments since Yamaha has done they merge or whatever.
But today I was doing maintenance on my son-in-law's (~1980???) Yamaha BB400 bass and I have to say I think it is a fantastic bass and I cannot see any inferiority to a Fender Pbass, which I guess it is modeled after. I only mention Pbass as a comparison since that is the industry standard for basses it seems.
Maybe the woods are different. I don't know what the finish is but it seems very nice thin satin or some kind of oil finish and not thick poly-ish at all. Gorgeous natural color.
Even the control cavity was finished and routed cleanly. No sawdust or wierd dusty detritus inside like I have seen on higher end basses.
Just as nicely finished as the outside of the body.
Electronics are still in good shape after 40+ years. Neck joint was sweet. Has a high mass bridge.
Truss rod works fine and had a nice cutout for a Gibson type adjuster. Tone is just like a Pbass. Bet you couldn't tell.
I'll try to post pics tomorrow. But I was surprised how nice this thing is. Looks like they go for dirt cheap online these days, too.
2 piece body, one piece neck with headstock wings.
