I will write a more detailed post in the next days.

I have owned many Martin's,Roy Nobles, Bourgeois and Collings and also a Merrill and the D 40 goes along with the best of the best! If you did not know it it looks brand new with that ageing toner stuff Martin use's but this is the real thing. It plays like a new guitar and it is not at all broken in, the frets are great and med. low action with great action but I may raise the action in the future, it has a perfect neck.

I have the full report of the luthier and work he did and will add that to, in the next days.

Yes this is worth every penny, I have never seen a guitar this old look this new.

Congratulations! This is great thanks hear.

Question: is the fretboard indeed flat, as some suggested it would be?

Yes and Dan Kelcheck in 2010 dressed the frets and oil treat the fingerboard

Also Removed headstock verneer and reglued

Removed pick guard and reglue with contact adhesive.

Glue and sealed the the top tome cracks with crosspatchs (perfect work)

Adjusted, set up and cleaned and that was about it.

I have say if you played Hooper or Altman hog this would be the choice!

It was sold to the guy I bought in 2012 and I have his bill of sale and there is no fret were and he did not play much at all!

I will!

PS the case looks like it never left the store!!!!

Rick, looking forward to some pictures and some feelings on the axe after you've played it a while.

The orig. owner bought it 9/66 and died at 15 in a car crash 12/66

His brother then 7 (who I talked to) took some guitar lesson's in high school but bought a cheaper guitar to take out and this one never left the house.

By college he never played guitar again.

It sat in it's case (also never left house after 12/66

The brother who sold still lives tin the same house so it never left after 5/66
.
In 5/10 he took a luthier Dan Kelchek

The guy I bought it from got in 6/12 and there is not fret wear and also rarely played it and it did not leave the house.
I think it was because it was 1 3/4 and he plays a lot of guitar with a smaller nut size. And it was from the same area
so when shipped to me it may have been the first time.

I will follow-up when I know the bracing he put new strings on and I will wait till I change them next week.

Have a good weekend.

Best,

Rick

I just wanted to let those interested that it is X braced and will wright a review as soon as I can.

It sounds like it just left the store in 1966 after sitting around since 1964.

It is now ready for a great adventure!

The way that guitars were assembled at Guild was such that it was possible for an earlier body to lay around for some time before it was made into a complete guitar. So it could be either the 'fan' bracing or the X-bracing, although I would expect this one to already have X-bracing.

Pretty much like I expected!
