I am basically looking for the 12-string equivalent of the Peregrine. I love my flat-tops, but playing a chambered or solid-body acoustic-electric like the Peregrine is so much fun. The closest equivalent 12 string by Guild is the FS46-12CE, and I recently acquired one. But its stock electronics are antiquated and not so easily upgraded. Although I have not yet given up on finding a solution, I am considering a non-Guild alternative.

Very close to pulling the trigger on a Rick Turner Renaissance model (RS-12). Anyone have any experience with these guitars, or any comparable ones?

I have ruled out Godin and Taylor offerings.

Thanks.

Thanks, Chaz, but I am looking for a guitar with a piezo and acoustic strings, not an electric 12.

Also, I already have a Starfire XII that I like a lot, but it serves a different purpose.

I think the Rick Turner guitar is the move if it fits in your budget. I've never read a bad word about any of them, and Rick was a prince of a guy, too.

So far my dealings with his company have been great. The company seems to be going strong even after Rick’s death earlier this year.

The guitars are very customizable.

They can even do a lava burst finish, which I am strongly considering. I sent them a picture of GAD’s Nightbird to give them a reference.

Close to pulling the trigger. Flamed maple top with a lava-burst top and neck (also maple), blackwood bridge and fingerboard, abalone purfling and dot inlays.

Incidentally, the Renaissance guitars have a high-end D-TAR system.

I did not know that D-TAR stands for Duncan Turner Acoustic Research, and that these systems are his design.

The guitar has two carbon truss rods, and I was told that Rick used .12s on his and tuned it to standard pitch. I would never do that (.10s for me), but the fact that they can handle that kind of tension is reassuring.

Not a fan of the Godin. A friend had an A6, and I just did not like the feel of it.

And when he played my Peregrine he decided to acquire one, and he later sold the Godin.

[veer] I recently picked up a DigiTech Mosaic 12-string simulator. No, it doesn't sound exactly like a 12-string. But it's close enough that I don't feel compelled to bring a second instrument for 3-4 songs in an evening's performance. For electric or amplified acoustic. It's worth checking out, even if you decide it's not suitable.[/veer]

The Turner is a work of art, but I couldn't justify it myself.

Korean builds, I think. Decent basic construction. Good materials and electrics. Some setup issues.

A friend had one that got stolen. He didn't shed a lot of tears, but he was sad.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

I am looking for a guitar that is comparable or better than the Peregrine, and I think the Renaissance is the only one that fits the bill.

I really like the FS46-12CE, and if I can upgrade the electronics, that may solve my problem (more on that later).

But I may be too emotionally invested in the Renaissance to turn back now, so I think I will probably end up ordering it.

The Renaissance 12-string comes with Gotoh Mini tuners, but they said they can basically install any kind.

I don't think I have used Gotohs before, although I hear they are fine. Better than Grovers?

Any specific recommendations would be appreciated. Not 6-on-a-plate, however. Individual tuners only.

Thanks.

I've never had a problem with any Gotoh tuners, or any quality modern tuners. Except Sperzels, where I've had them cut strings when trying to clamp them.

On a 12-string I would probably figure mass into my choice, if I had options.

Well, that looks like an awesome choice (the Turner Renaissance, that is). What are you going to get for wood, awagner?!

Can't wait to hear about it!

I'm sure it will be great. Rick (may he RIP) was a legend, and a very nice man, too.

The finish I selected is similar to this, but closer to the lava burst Nightbird
