Just wondering if they ever did their version of a Flying V. Thanks!

They did one or possibly more for Jack Casady that he played for a while.

Not too hard to see why that didn't last!

The Casady bass was a custom build for Jack using a Guild JetStar neck and Hagstrom Bisonics. The builder was Leo Quan, of Badass bridge fame, or someone working for him. The Bisonics came from Jack's stash. Not sure where the neck came from. The late @mgod had played it and reported that it was heavy and almost impossible to play seated.

That flying v jetstar bass circiutry and/or its bisonics may have been hot rodded by Wickersham or Alembic. Somone posted a while ago that there is a photo where it looks like the cable is a 5-pin like for an Alembic. To me, i'm not sure, but it sounds like something is active or hot rodded, on the bass, or possibly his amp. But who knows with Jack.

decide for yourself:

Thanks to the always correct internet.

The Builder of Casady's bass was Glenn Quan. I have no idea why I remembered "Leo" but my post upstream is wrong.

It has been reported that the bass once had a Guild/Hagstrom bridge that was later replaced by a Badass style bridge. Pictures or it didn't happen, I say.

Jack discusses the bass here.

When asked about the sound he says:

Nothing like the Guild, you know it was a solid body instrument a whole different sound. There was no custom electronics or anything, stock electronics. The only thing I did as I did in the other basses, I would increase the Alnico magnets in the pickups.

I'm willing to support the claim that there were no Alembic style mods.

Someday someone will start a sticky thread with everything we think we know or believe about this bass. But someday is not today and someone is not me. Yet.

"I would increase the Alnico magnets in the pickups," to me qualifies as a hot rodding.

It definitely sounds like a signal boost. If he says he did the same in his other Guilds, that makes sense, those sound similar, but those also have extensive electronic mods.

We can quibble about the definitions but I was reacting to "may have been hot rodded by Wickersham or Alembic" and expressing skepticism about who had done it. Changing the magnets definitely is some kind of mod and I am reminded of the days of HO scale slot cars when upgrading the magnets was definitely "hot rodding" :)

I saw Hot Tuna on that tour. It was out doors at Parade Stadium in MPLS. Mira Muldar and Bonnie Raitt played also. I clearly remember standing up front and watching Jack play his Flying V.
Thanks John
