Thanks. I am one of these guys that has to fix everything, however in this case I guess less is more. (y)

Please do not touch the headstock or any of the TRC screw holes. If the TRC is rattling when you play it, just remove the TRC, and keep the TRC and one original screw in a ziplock bag, in the case compartment. Also, I sent you a message here on the forum. -Eric

C.W.Wolf's bass has one!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks Hans, yes I saw his photos.

pretty sure Grot's do not, with the larger headstock. @mellowgerman reports his does not.

I had two identical 1970 JS-2's with neck Hagstrom Bisonic and bridge Hagstrom mini-hum, no suck switch, large headstock, and no volute.

My 2013 GSR M-85-II has the volute, and smaller headstock.

I once had a 1968 SF-2, with the volute, and smaller headstock.

So all of this just to say... I have never seen the large headstock, together with the volute.

It took me some time to figure out what a "volute" was. I take it that the volute and the larger headstock are not very common. Is this possibly to do with the move from Hoboken to Westerly?

seems like the volute was something Guild used for a while during 1966-1968 on many different models. according to Hans' book page 42, it is closer to 1965-1970, with classicals getting the volute in 1961. That is not the reason I asked however...the reason I asked doesn't make much sense, due to the large headstock, which I knew about, and also 99% knew those large headstocks do not have the volute.

There is also a chance that @mellowgerman has a true semi-hollow and @C.W.Wolf has a "chambered" version, which would definitley be heavier. I will let @The Guilds of Grot chime in on that one, and he can show us his M-85's as well!

I have surmised at this point that no USA M-85 is "chambered," They are either fully hollow or semi-hollow. They would not be chambered with binding on the back. @The Guilds of Grot's red burst is likely a full hollow, with a small block for the brigde (like my GSR M-85); and his sunburst with humbuckers is semi-hollow (like @mellowgerman and @C.W.Wolf). I do not know for sure, but would guess the spruce ones are full hollows, maples could be either full or semi, and that MellowGerman has a maple one (hard to say being painted sold black). I believe the term 'semi-solid' simply describes a semi-hollow guitar that does not have F-holes (but full hollow is full hollow, with or without F-holes) These are some intriguing birds!

I wish I had a scale available to weigh it. It would be interesting to compare the weights and see if there is some correlation to the different specs of these M85s. Maple vs spruce, etc. A friend of mine in one of the bands I played in, made me a custom leather shoulder piece for my strap after an especially long gig we did, one 4th of July on a flatbed trailer. She said she didn't like the groove it made in my shoulder. I still have it. Pretty well-worn but made a huge difference for a skinny, tall guy.

C.W. I think you have enough posts now to put up a FS thread in our buy, sell, trade forum. Maybe do that. If so, please read the FAQ there.
I should have enough posts in a couple of weeks. I am up to 28 at the moment.

I don't know if the latest rules are 10 posts PLUS 1 year membership or "OR" 1 year. Either way, if you upgrade your membership level (which you can do from your control panel) you can get post right away. Check out the FAQ in the B/S/T forum.
