Hello,

Does anyone have drawings and/or specifications for the original humbuckers that were used in the X-79? I'm preparing to restore one I purchased for my collection and I'd like to attempt to recreate these and make 2 metal pickup rings.

There were a number of different pickups used on the X-79. Some of the them used Guild HB-1s, some used DiMarzio, and there may have been one or two others. What year is yours?

What were in most X-79s were DiMarzio made humbuckers Guild called XR-7. There where some that had the optional Guild HB-1 humbuckers and some that had EMG humbuckers, but the most common where the XR-7 by DiMarzio.

The XR-7 is in the 5.6K range when measured on an ohm meter. I guess that makes its output similar to a "PAF" style humbucker. I like them.

As to wiring, it's pretty standard. The three control knobs are neck volume, bridge volume and tone control. The volume pots are 500K and the tone pot is a 200K with a .022 capacitor.

The DiMarzio pickups in my '85 X-79 are hotter than that. They measure 8.3K (neck) and 13.6K (bridge). I wish they were low wind PAF types.

I believe it's a 1983 (Serial #: AD100615).

There are at least three variations of the XR7 pickups. 5k would be low for any of them I’d think. Hell even HB1s are generally in the 7k range and I often describe those as being kind of like low-wind PAFs.

Yeah, my bad for trusting my memory. I metered a couple of XR-7s this morning and they are in the 8.6K range.

GGJaguar, Are those DiMarzios in your '85 X-79 open coils or black block style? I have some black block style DiMarzios that came out of an X-80 that have similar measurements at 8.6K and 14.6K

Did it come with a XR7 hang tag?
No. I don't remember who identified them as being DiMarzios, but that's what I recall. I guess I'll need to yank one and see what's on the back.

The XR-7 pickups were open pickups as shown in that 1982 ad below, so the above are not XR-7.

1983 catalog: XR-7 or HB-1.

June 1, 1984: EMGs available.

Oct 1, 1985: The 1985 version comes with a DiMarzio "X2N" and a "H.B.".

GGJaguar, I'm guessing from the headstock logo design and the two knob controls that load from the back, that this is one from late in the run? Like from maybe #1500 or higher?

It's interesting that Guild would change design during a small run. Like on the S-25/S-250/S-275 runs, you'll see the knobs and switches in different positions between guitars of the same model number. For example, look at these two S-25 models and how the knobs and switches are in different places and even the shape of the lower bouts and the "horns" of the upper bouts are slightly different.

Yes, GG's is a late-run X79. Guild has a fair few solid body models with many variations. The S60D has at least two knob layouts, for example. The S300s have different designs toward the end of the run where they stopped having pick guards.

Back to the pickups, I don't think that the black-covered Dimarzios are XR7s. Hans would probably know but I imagine that's a next-book topic. Black-topped Dimarzios were sometimes found on Nightbirds, too, and I don't think Nightbirds ever came with XR7s.

Dimarzio was terrible about identifying pickups when they made them. I've emailed their tech support a few times trying to identify old pickups with nothing but "Dimarzio - Made in the USA" on the back and most of the times the best they could give me was, "Well it could be this or that" but rarely a definitive answer.

No, I don't think they are XR-7s either, only that they were made by DiMarzio. I seem to recall trying to track down what they were at the time I got them and couldn't find anything similar by DiMarzio and figured that DiMarzio made them only for guitar companies and not the retail market.

Based on the DC resistance alone I'm guessing they are a Super II (neck) and Super Distortion (bridge).

It looks like they still make the X2N. I have no idea what an "H.B." is.
