Hello. I was doing some cleaning around the house and opened a guitar case that belonged to my father in law. My wife never remembers this coming out of the case, so it has not been touched in about 50 years (at least)! It is a Hoboken made Mark IV (SN 65874). Any ideas on date of manufacture? Date does not seem to match formats I have seen online. Thanks! -Bruce

It's from 1972. Guild went back and forth from no prefixes to prefixes to no prefixes to prefixes...

Welcome! While your guitar has a serial number that would date it to 1972, the detail photo that you posted gives the impression that we're looking at an older guitar. If I had to date it by what I can see in the photo, I would say mid-'60s. Can you show us a photo of the front and the back, so I can maybe find an explanation for this?

Thanks for the photos. Looks definitely like an earlier guitar; most likely made around 1965. At this point I think the most plausible explanation would be a serial number mistake.

Hans is the expert on dating Guilds, so I don't think you'll get any more precise info on dating it.

That's a long time to be stored away. I'm glad it didn't dry out and crack! That sticker looks brand new!
