It's fascinating to me how few of us LTGers actually are interested (personally) in this relic process. I have to admit that I think old instruments that have "honest" play wear are wonderful to behold. I imagine that's because I was raised with classical instruments where "old wood" is where it's at.

Anyway, I think the stuff they're doing to these Murphy Lab instruments is technically fascinating, even if I wouldn't want one for myself.

Sure you would. You could flip it for like $8k. :)

Seriously, though, if you ever get the chance to check out a Murphy Labs Les Paul don’t pass it up. They are amazing guitars. Worth it? Probably not unless your a “Blues Lawyer” but they really are quite nice.

People pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for 1959 Les Pauls in damn near *any* condition.
Yup. For collectors, provenence matters. They pay for the real thing, to own a piece of history.* As my grandmother used to say, they should live and be happy.
A Murphy Lab gets you a similar experience for orders of magnitude less money. And there is clearly a demand for them.
Absolutely! There's a demand for Hummel figurines, high-capacity assault weapons, OxyContin, and Thomas Kincade "art," too. What we can buy, we will buy. That's why I have too many guitars.

But I can't help wonder:

- Why are so many people so lazy they'll pay someone else to wear holes in their jeans for them?

- Does it make sense to buy something phony in the quest for authenticity?

Questions for the ages. Let's let God sort it out.

*As if that were possible.

I saw that link too, and was wondering whether the whole "it even sorta sounds like a vintage guitar because of the relicing" was true or just snake oil salesmanship.

I'll be perfectly honest and say that I've been tempted by some of the ML models before, especially the "lower" priced Les Paul Specials ($4k+). I guess I'll only find out by playing one, but haven't seen one in a store anywhere near me.
