I got offered such a good deal on this I couldn't resist...a Fender Vibro King!
I wanted one bad when they came out around the mid-90's, but they were much too expensive for me. This was the time a good Super Reverb was still cheap, and that's what I (happily) played then.

It's a strange design unlike any traditional Fender amp. There's an entire Fender outboard ("surf") reverb unit built into it in front of the amp's input, it has a ridiculously large power transformer, high voltage on the two 6L6 power tubes, no negative feedback and a solid state rectifier, a hefty tweed bassman output transformer, opto tremolo and three fairly light 10" Alnico speakers.
It's fairly large, very heavy and LOUD - but through the unique tone stack design, not uncontrolably so - put bass, mid and treble on zero and nothing comes out - so you can effectively use the tone controls as a kind of attenuator.

It all translates into a pretty unique amp - huge drippy Reverb, unusually early breakup for such a big amp if you want it, a strange but cool mix of a fast, crazy dynamic attack and punch because of the power supply, and a bluesy compression element from the alnico speakers and zero negative feedback.
As if it was designed for my brand of rowdy Rockabilly/Rootrock.

It's going to come in handy the coming months, I have some big outdoor stage festivals coming up and I think the punch and authority of this thing will be just perfect for those - where my usual souped-up tweed Bandmaster is a little too saggy and compressed. It's definitely not a small-to-medium club amp, but I'm not playing any of those this spring and summer. Stoked!! 20240401_125410.jpg

Townshend’s weapon of choice pretty much since they came out. He always liked the Fender sound, which is why, oddly enough, he went with Hi-Watts for much of the golden era. He hated the Marshall sound.

Depending on how you set the tone controls (they're key to the way it operates), it has some Hiwatt to it - if you hit your guitar hard, it doesn't go squishy or mushy, but it punches back at you fast and hard.
And Townsend plays it with the matching closed back 2x12 connected, so it gets extra big, tight and loud!

Pete’s settings, according to the Whotabs site.

Very cool amp. One doesn’t see them very often. A friend of mine had one , and he did use it for small gigs, and made it sound good, too. He could make a rubber band uke sound good, though.
It’s made for what you’re going to do with it, the big stage. Turn it up!

Cool amps - essentially a 6G15 tank in front of a black-panelish Fender amp with no negative feedback and massive iron. I'd bet a little mushy if you really cranked it, but loud enough that you'll never need to. Rick Miller from SCOTS used one for a while.

Does yours have the EL84 or the 6V6GT reverb driver?

I like the VK, but as you noted, it's loud and heavy. Enjoy!

I won't be playing this one much at home..!
Yeah, I don't know why I had Twin Reverb. It was unusable at home and I never needed anything bigger than a Vibrolux Reverb or Pro Reverb for gigs.

Great amp - it should serve you well. I always thought that was a great idea to have basically an on-board Fender Reverb unit in these.

Gary Clark Jr. plays or played these (he did when I first learned of him, anyway).
