Thanks Christopher! This would make for a good sticky in the "Tech Shop" forum, I think.

edit: Chazmo: ^^ Culled from another thread as part of a separate discussion.

What we've found, Sandy, is that a lot of stickies just clutters up the forum listings, and I'm (we're) disinclined to do that. Also, the forum search is now really good with the addition of Google searches and other work by GAD. No offense at all to Chris, of course.

These days, pinned threads are usually just important announcements. Not universally, of course, but you know what I mean.

I'm sure you guys know best, I'd hate to see this get buried.

... a single sticky with tech tips that contains links to good threads.
That might work in the tech shop forum. I like this idea. This section is fairly focused to begin with. Do we have to keep such a thread locked and moderate it? That's the fundamental challenge with this idea.

We've tried other few things in the past to accommodate/encouraged something like "reference threads" but it hasn't worked. The LTG site is highly participatory and things get veered or out of hand with incorrect information quickly. For instance, this discussion that we're having is a veer...

Sections/forums that we've put in place for this purpose have not worked. Pinned threads in other forums have quickly become obsolete or irrelevant. And, again, if we lock it, it has to be moderated.

Just pointing out the pitfalls. Not 100% sure how to make it work. But, I think an open thread here in Tech Shop could probably work.

Closed thread with links to other threads. I see no reason for such a thread to have replies.

Good idea. But I would imagine a mod should be able to edit it and add additional links as necessary.

I'm going to give it a try here in Tech Shop.

Right, Rocky. Only moderators can edit closed threads.

Would adding key words at the end of a useful tech post (schematics, circuit layout, "how to", etc) help with the search function?

Well, see what I'm doing here in the tech shop and see if you like it. I'm currently editing the (one) sticky post with links to make it easily accessible and readable.

That'll work. :)
Greg, FYI, I didn't mean to blow off your suggestion, by the way... Keywords definitely help with the search function, but the way we do things here the right words normally should show up in people's natural language postings...

In any case, I don't think all the mods (and other members) have seen what I've done here in Tech Shop to essentially index the formerly sticky/pinned threads into one reference (links) thread.
