Hi all,
Here is my simple question, do I need another OM? It has become my favorite body shape, for many reasons.
I currently own a Guild OM-120, 2010 Guild F-30 R standard and A Larrivee OM-03 which has solid ‘hog back and sides, solid Sitka top and ebony fretboard. I seem to have all bases covered in terms of back and sides via mahogany and rosewood along with Sitka top and the ‘hog top on the OM-120. ‘Looking for input.

Unless you find one with some unique tonewoods, probably not. If you want different, yet similar, try a 12-fret 000.

Looks like you are well covered. If you like the smaller bodies (as I do) then it might be worth looking into other wood variation that will provide different tones. Cedar or redwood tops or a maple, walnut, cocobolo, etc. back and sides.

Certainly different models or makers can have some variation in sound simply based on the differences in their construction.

It might also be worth trying some larger or deeper grand orchestra or auditorium sizes which might offer something different but still be comfortable.

If you are near shops where you can try before you buy that would help give you and idea of what appeals to you. Otherwise take your chances and be willing to resell if you don’t bond or find it doesn’t offer you the variation you are looking for.

How about a nice mahogany with an Adirondack top? :)

Thank you for the informative information Mikey. Years ago I was fortunate to build a small jumbo, with a local luthier, made with walnut back and sides, Sitka top and ebony board; it sounds fantastic but it is big, not made for longevity playing. Walnut seems to be a more popular wood to fall back on these days and I would be open for pursuing some ideas you mentioned!

My suggestion? I'd buy a better mahogany OM, and sell the OM-120. OM-120s are great values, but there's much better mahogany OMs available, and more in line with your existing herd. Orpheums like mine are really closer to a M/0000, and are impossible to find, but a good Martin OM or 000-18 might be worth looking into. I've played some excellent ones.

Hi all, I appreciate the feedback; as my subject title stated…need or want. Finding a balance between the two is challenging. I am also considering a parlor size, possibly M20 or M-25E??? The search is always enjoyable!
