I hit this shop every few weeks just in case there might be a good guitar needing rescue. They've got them all hanging on the wall, squeezed in tight. So I start reading the names on the head stocks. Kona, Epiphone, Valencia, Ovation, Huntington, Guild, First Act, .....Whoa - Guild! Back up! A D25! But my happiness soon turned to disappointment. Badly abused, nicks, deep scratches, the arched back must have spent a lot of time against a big buckle, worn nearly through. The irrational part of my mind says, OK maybe you can live with that It's got mojo - right? How's it sound? Well, very high action, nearly unplayable - needs a neck reset bad. The saddle was lowered so much there was practically no string break. Looking bad! Neck relief - mmm, a little too much. Maybe a little tweak of the truss rod would make everything OK (I'm reaching now). I asked the guy behind the counter, "can I take the cover off and check the truss rod?" He just said "nope".....
$499 + tax.....
Me - "Is that your best price?", Him - "Yep".
I went home empty handed.
It did sound sweet in the Cowboy Chord positions though.

Good eye, fbh, sounds like she nedds a passel of work. Guys with answers like that don't get my business either. Probably woulda offered him $150 just to watch his reaction :D You're obviously much more knowledgable about the guitar than he wants to be...

Check back once in a while. If after several months it's still hanging on the wall, talk to the manager and offer him $150-$200.

It sounds to me like you dodged a bullet on that one! Not every "desirable" guitar is truly desirable. A little patience (and a little luck) could easily yield you an extremely playable, cosmetically unchallenged D25 for less.

Hang tough!
