Just a guess (my new disclaimer in case I get Hans'd or Ralf'd), but I think the one on the left is a '71 and the one on the right is a '70 or '71.

Given that almost all of the non-catalog variations on the JS bass happened in '70 or '71 that makes a lot of sense. Makes me wonder about a sunburst JS but at some level I really don't want to know that they exist.
