I just had a new nut cut for my new D-50 to increase string spacing. I'm very happy with the improved playability, but very distressed over the aesthetic result (see photos below). The work was done by a respected Guild dealer and experienced repairperson (not by some teenage lackie at a big box guitar store). I was unfortunately (and foolishly) in a hurry when I picked the guitar up, so I didn't closely inspect the work. Upon discovery, at home, I was quite upset. The dealer claims that this is nearly unavoidable because Guild glooses over the factory nut with a thick coating.

He (and obviously I) wish that Guild didn't do this...but I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem. Shouldn't an experienced repair person be able to do a better job????

These are the best photos I could get. Note the sloppy scoring on the edges of the nut.

Input is greatly appreciated.

Ouch! I'm no luthier but I would have thought that if the guy that did it had scored through the finish with a sharp blade first before tapping out the nut then it wouldn't have chipped out like that. I'm sure that it could be dropped filled with lacquer and made good though.

The repair guy should have told you in advance about possible cosmetic issues- they are indeed likely to happen when doing nut work where the finish is over the nut.
My guy warned me ahead, then did a pretty good job- not perfect, but as I look at many old guitars I always see some cosmetic issues around the nut because so many guitars have work done there.
If you paid a lot you should expect a real neat job. If you paid a little you should still expect a workmanlike job, but the cosmetics might be an issue.

I agree. This is a bit extreme, but I liken this to taking a new car in for the replacement of a headlight and picking it up with chips in the paint around the new headlight...

Take it back and complain a bit, my friend. It seems like something that can be corrected, and it should be corrected.

You are the paying customer, and you have a right to expect professional work.

I agree with Dave.

It will always bother you unless you can get some kind of repair/retribution. They, as a dealer should want you to be happy as well.
