I ended up buying this shred stick thing. While it's not an X-79, I should look suitably ridiculous playing it.

LOL

Have to admit, I was wondering what that post was all about.

Congrats. A shred machine, complete with pointy headstock. Whodathunk Guild had it in 'em?

What's the specs on this thing - what's the body made of and what are the tuners like?

Rock on, dewd!

Not sure if it's a setneck or a boltneck, but it was cheap enough that my wife didn't complain.

It's a boltneck. That's cool.

Actually what you have I believe if I remember correctly is a somewhat rare Guild guitar.

I think Hans posted about this model in another thread that I'm too lazy to look up at this time.

I think this is the Aviator/Detonator hybrid. It has the Aviator bottom shape and Dentonator "horns".

Crap! I'm going to have to find the thread now. Be right back!

Ah, found it! http://letstalkguild.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9928&hilit=detonator

There ya go default!

I think the unique feature is the guitar had a Liberator body and a 22 fret (instead of 24 fret) pointy head neck. Not sure of the scale length but Liberators were the longer 25.5 inch scale.

rare = nobody wanted the darned thing.

According to the seller, it's been messed with, but I don't know how bad it is until I get it.

You got a great deal, Steve, and I think you will find much to like about this guitar. IMO, very underrated and underpriced at $400.

Oooo! When can I watch?

(I'd offer to come play but I'm afraid even the JS is too subdued to be in the same room).

Sure, but you'll have to wait for my codpiece to come in from www.cameo.com.
Nothing says 80's-90's dignity like spandex and a codpiece.

Maybe I could get by with a zuchinni which seems to be part of the traditional bass player's garb.

(Sorry, someone else has to take "codpiece" and "bass" and veer to a fishy thread).

Actually the use of potato(e)s, zuchinni, kielbasa, and bananas was discussed a couple of weeks ago but the minutes don't reflect anything firm.....

The king of all poseur shred metal guitars has to be the Ibanez XV500. All points and angles, and came in the pink to purple fade, or the turquoise to blue fade color schemes. It is so outlandish, it is cool, in the "its so out there, it has to be cool, because I can't think of any other way to describe it" way. X-79 and X-80 are very definitely up there as poseur shred metal guitars, but they have some organic curves on them, as least.

Wow. I'm not even cool enough to be a poseur. My kids will be heartbroken. My not so secret desire is to pick up an X-79 on day, preferably when I start to look a little bit closer to Burl Ives.
