I have to go with Three Dog Night, if only because their heyday of hits matches up with my teenage years. Loved them!

This one is no contest. The orginal by Andrea True is a classic example of the best of disco - I'm not a big disco fan but it was hard to escape during my college years. This song is fun, and if no one knew, you could easily mistake it for a Blondie track!

And I am definitley not a fan of "sampling", otherwise known as ripping off original artists.

I'm surprised to see there ain't much guitar playing involved in your selections : rather astonishing on a Guitar Forum, especially a Guild one...🎸
We're getting into teen aged school girls hits a bit too much sometimes, I find...:);)
Anybody's playing guitar here. 😇

While I'm a guitar player, I'm a much bigger fan of music than I am of 'guitarists.'

I've been going through pages I had left aside, so I have found quite a few good guitar players - with good songs too...
It's not so much the guitar playing that I miss, but space for instruments, and good (live) playing. I'd take violins, pianos, organs, drums or banjos, along with double bass (or electric bass) drums and so on, even in the studio as long as it's real playing and if possible playing together...

Okay, so I remember this thread.... and thought..... "did I already post this one?" and maybe not. BUT....

I honestly didn't know who Judee Sill was until Shawn Colvin did her song. So what do you say?

A very long ago version.... and now a long ago version by Shawn Colvin.

What say you? They're both wonderful....

The original is a little more raw singer-song writer while the cover has a little slicker production. What bothers me about the original is the double tracked vocals. I don't care for that in this context. If it's ever remastered, they should try it without the double tracking.

I prefer the Shawn Colvin version not only because I really like her music but this song really fits her style and I would like to hear her sing this song without the background instruments, just her playing and singing. Judee Sill was a unique talent for the time writing from Christian themes. I looked her up and she is another singer songwriter gone too soon and the age of 35. Hailed by her contemporaries as being in the center of the Folk scene and the first artist so sign with David Geffen's Asylum Records.
There it is again Tom.......................another artist from my earlier years that I had not heard of. I had moved away from Folk to bands like Tull and Floyd by the late 70s.

+1 for the Colvin version, and another +1 for hearing it as a solo acoustic version!

Walrus, I'm at an impasse with this one. They both have their qualities without any detractions, both showing the qualities of each performer I remember them both from the 1990's when TNN was on cable tv and they were on various segments.
Is that an Autoharp on the Crowell recording? I haven't heard one for a long time.

Townes Van Zandt - "No Place to Fall"

And a recent cover by Rodney Crowell

I'm a big Crowell fan, and I have to say I like his version better, although one can't say enough about the number of great songs Van Zandt has written.

I agree with comments above-I am a fan of both of these artists.
This is a great great tune, one of Townes' many great songs.
I came to Townes later, having known about Rodney since his early days with Emmy Lou.
I saw Townes once, in a small bar outside of Boston. he was filling in a night while on tour. It was kind of a "What the hell are you doing here?" moment.
I've seen Rodney several times, more than once in small clubs in Cambridge and Somerville. The times I've seen him he has just stood at the side of the stage post show, and chatted with all comers. They were great shows--really good--and he was just happy to chat. Kind of a will-o-the-wisp guy, lots of fun to talk to.
I've also been fortunate enough to see Rodney and Emmy Lou together and that was time-stoppingly wonderful.
Transcendant.

For me, the original recorded by the song writer deserves the + over the cover version. I just feel that the originator has, in most cases, a leg up on the interpretation of the lyric. I am usually partial to anything Shawn records and her ability to make a song her own usually makes the difference. This time. the arrangement is the same although I do like the unmanipulated recording with the acoustic string squeaking; makes it more like a live performance.:) jmho
