IIRC, alcohol should readily dissolve shellac but not harm nitrocellulose lacquer . . . someone more-knowledgeable about guitar finishes (Curt?) might have a more-confident answer.

Hello all,

Haven't had any experience with shellac over nitro, I would for sure give the alcohol a try. You might also want to try naptha it wont hurt the nitro either, other than dull it down and that can be re-buffed. If either one softens up the shallac, you might even try scrubbing with 0000 steel wool wetted with the liquid. Don't worry about dulling the nitro finish as I sad before it can be buffed back to where it should be.

Now onto SF-IV progress. The whole body has had the black removed, only the neck and headstock left to do. Then we can get to fixing the things like the headstock overlay and a few small binding issues. As you have guessed I can't play her anymore for a while :( All of her nice vintage parts a packed in there own little zip lock bags. After the few repairs, which I will be posting pics for, I can start with the finish work and eventually start putting her back the way she should be.

So here's where we are now,

Mmmmm. I LOVE Cherry. It looks a little washed out but I suspect it's a combination of the pic quality and the now "unglossy" finish. Or is there a beef-up of the color planned?
Thanks so much, this thread's pretty unique.

Hi Tom; really enjoying watching your work. Once upon a time, another LTGer, our Maximum Leader Don, he took a little elbow grease to a needy Starfire ... and this is what he got for his trouble ... taken from the thread that made me want to join LTG. (Original LTG thread; progress pics gone)

Nice SF-3 are those old DeArmond P/Us? And Thanks, Bluesy hope you like it when it's done.

Well the neck, headstock and P/U cavitys are scraped, whew! Now on to the fun stuff. Here are some of the problems that need to be taken care of.

At this point, we can start seeing the classic look of the Guild 'hog. Looks like a Starfire IV in "natural mahogany", doesn't it?

I can't believe you got 25+ year-old black spray paint off of the label.

Morning Dave,

Like I said before I got pretty lucky with that. Most of what was on the label was over spray that was almost dry when it hit the lable so it didn't stick very well. I think it's starting to get that Guild hog look as well. After looking at some pictures in Hans book, and online, I think it needs a little more color on it, but it's getting close. Going to have to switch over to working some of the other parts until a few supplies I ordered show up. I need to do that anyway to have everything ready to reassemble. Trying to decide if I should go ahead and re-fret? They are not to bad, but have been filed before and have some mnor divits in them. Leveling out the fret board and re-freting would make it perfect and leave it with no issues for years to come. We have come this far I'm thinking might ought to go all the way. Opinions welcomed!

Well back to work untill 6:00 then headed for the jam. Every one have a great Saturday.
