BP, do you know if that binding is new?

I saw the guitar several times as it was being restored, and I don't think the binding had to be replaced.

But maybe Mr. Fixit will chime in with the facts.

Sorry Darryl, I was still choking on your sig...
As I recall, all the Master did was apply some amber tinted lacquer on the existing white binding, but not replacing it....

Fixit,

Pardon my ignorance, but did you replace the binding?

fuxit

Darryl,

I did not replace the binding on the SF-IV. Bluesey was correct, I cleaned up the binding after the black paint was removed. Then it was masked off while the additional color was added. and later prior to clear coating the binding was sprayed with a tinted lacquer.

fixit,

Looks like you and I both appreciate the color of old binding more than the color of new binding. I have a 1953 Guild that has lost most of its binding, and I'm hoping to re-bind it with old used binding. So please let me know if you are salvaging any two-ply binding and I'll buy it from you. I know it's weird, but this old '53 would look wrong with new binding. When I get a picture of it, I'll fax it.

Hi Darryl,
I don't think binding tends to yellow with age too much, but rather the finish over it does. Assuming you can get a reasonable match in terms of ply thickness, etc., you should be fine using new binding and spraying it with yellowed lacquer like Fixit's done. I bet you could even spray the binding before you install it and maybe not have to worry about overspray on the guitar or insane amounts of masking, etc.

Well almost there! Still working on getting a pickguard having one made, but would still be interested if anybody has on that would work, especially an original, but not much chance of that!

Here's another picture with strings, sounds great! Working on something so everyone can hear it. It's comming but may take a few weeks.

Everyone have a great day!

This picture above looks so much like how I remember my SF looked before the PO that I bought it from decided he would apply his auto body tools and skills to it and ended up with this.....

I HAD to register and comment on this stunning restoration. A dream of mine for many years was to have my 67 SF IV returned to former glory. I have the older brother (EL1199) of the guitar you masterfully rescued and magically dipped into the fountain of youth.
Mr. Fixit, let me know when you're ready to apply your magic to another deserving candidate and how many years of indentured servitude I have to endure to have my dream come true.

Welcom to LTG :!: Cool SF, Interesting color, At least it's unique. I will need to know more about what kind of paint it is before I can
figure out how to get it off. PM me and we can talk about it.

Again welcome, you have found a great place to talk about Guild's

ELI, that's one heck of a first post! I do have to agree that I prefer redheads over blondes...

Default,
'specially mustard colored blondes...
In my defense, when I fell in love with my SF, she WAS a redhead. I made a offer....was rebuffed. The next time I saw her, she was a plain-jane, stripped of that luscious color, I was heart broken, but made another pass...passed by again. After that she was sporting a flat black brunette primer, which came off in your hands when playing. I kept trying to make her mine anyway. When I finally got her to go home with me, she was wearing that thick yellow-taxi cab colored rain slicker coat, which was masking other atrocities done to her. :(
But she sang so sweet, I decided to turn a blind eye to her previous relationship and those hard years that so degraded her appearance.
We've been together ever since.
Reading through this thread and seeing the pictures that told a similar story, I was astonished to learn that there actually existed a makeover magician musician that could possibly help me write that happy ending.

Plain women and ugly guitars have charms of their own, but I can see why you'd want to get her out of her rain slicker and into a red satin evening gown.

So I'm new here, and was drawn to this thread. At first I thought, well, an interesting endeavor, let's see what happens. And now, 9 pages later, I'm sooooo jealous, because this guitar turned out so gorgeous! I want it right away:) My own 1975 Star Fire IV is nice too, and I love her dearly, even though she can be rather stubborn sometimes! Well, blondes... But this red head, man that's something else :) So whenever you split up with her, please do make sure to let me know! I'll make her happy again ;)
Good job!

Blonde or Redhead? Blonde or Redhead? The only sensible thing is to have one of each. :D

The more I look at this, the more I think I want to port my '67 caps over to my '65 Starfire, which have pretty plain jane ceramic disk caps on there. Instead, it would be fun to get the .01 WIMA on the neck, and the .047 Mullard on the bridge, which should wake up the neck and tame down the bridge. Hmm!

Man I have to say that is a remarkable restore . My "on hold 'SF bass is still sitting in my basement.. I wanted to do it green but this makes me wish I could do the red. The idiot that tried to restore this bass sanded through the edges so I replace the veneer ! so no way Im gonna pull this off! I had to get the binding off with pliers because it was reattached with 1/2 " brads!
This is an inspiration to get my ass in gear! I can always paint it black

GREAT Job ,Thanx.M

That restore is awesome! I recently got me hands on a 1967 Guild Starfire III. It was well used and needs some repairs. I took to this one place and they kept it for 2 months and only changed the strings. I would like to do a restore job on it but don't know where to begin or who to bring it too. The place I did bring was supposed to be a highly rep place. They are rude and crapy work and my guitar ended up with a crack in the original Bibsgy that wasn't there when I brought to him.. He or his repair shop will never get recommendation from me our my friends.
