Re: And so it begins......

It is starting to look more "guitarish" and less like a pile of parts! More so every day. Yesterday the top got glued on.

Lots of progress over the weekends but then Monday rears its ugly head and jobs and life start slowing the progress. Still, it seems to be moving right along. The fact that all these parts are pre-made and formed makes a huge difference in the speed of this project. Stay tuned. Advice, encouragement, and questions are all part of the project, so let me hear 'em, okay? :D

Those are spool clamps, Joe. One of the few specific items that are for gluing the soundboard and back on to the rim of the guitar. It's difficult, if not impossible, to fake these. They are exactly what you need when doing that particular job. You can buy them from Stew-Mac and I'm sure other luthier supply sources. Those, along with the Cam Clamps had to be purchased for this project at a significant expense. Cam clamps come in sets of six for about $29. The cam clamps come in 4.5 inch and 8.5 inch versions and are about $15 each. See below.

I've used cam clamps for years but never had the occasion/need to use the spool clamps. Looks close to a couple dozen of the spools so you'll be able to start your own clamp store or luthiery when you're done!

Thanks,
Joe

The next guitar will be easier.... and cheaper. Maybe that's just a dream. Here's the top glued on without any clamps and posing with the next step which is the back getting glued on. Then some serious routering must take place....

Looks great,Tom! I would suggest that before your buddy glues the back on he signs and dates the inside of the top. Makes it easy to identify down the road in case of theft. A lot of builders do this......just playin' it safe :)

That sounds a little scary.... maybe like one wrong move or something and...? :?
Well isn't that the TRUTH!! You can do all the test runs you want but.... there's nothing like doing on a real guitar and .... you gotta worry.

Larry, just passed along the info.... GOOD IDEA!! This thing is rolling along so quickly that I don't think Don thought of that. So now it's time to date and sign. I have no idea where this guitar will end up or what it will sound like.... so I guess that's the point. I'm starting to work on some logos and stuff for the headstock. "Kennedy" is a good name to work with.... :D

It seems like the further along it goes, the more complicated everything gets. Before it was just assembling parts. Now each step become more complex. The back is on. It's now a big, echoey wooden box..... now comes the routering for the binding. That's gonna be a bit scary......

Edges get trimmed up and then contemplating the next move.

Okay boys and girls.... apparently Tom Petty had it WRONG!! The BINDING is the hardest part!! Sheesh!! So it's slowly moving along. Here's the neck and the fretboard being glued together.

gluingthefretboard.jpg

Then yesterday the back got routered and the binding got glued. What a chore, and even with the right Dremel tool it's tough to keep everything straight and level and even..... but it got done. So here's the back with the binding glued in.

bottombinding.jpg

I'm sure if you're using really nice REAL WOOD binding.... it's much easier but when you have that cheap plastic binding that's SO STIFF.... it's a real chore to glue that stuff in and make all the curves and get everything tight. Jeeze.....

This morning I gave Don a break and routered the top and so now the binding part is done. Now the second routering for the small and shallow purfling needs to happen.... but I have had too many glasses of wine for that!! So maybe tomorrow.

If y'all are getting tired of this project, just let me know. I know it's not that interesting but it's a CHORE to be sure!!! Merry Christmas mi amigos y amigas!!! :D :D

Ya kiddin' right?.... In the good Holiday spirit we'll give you a breather for Christmas day, but we'll be expecting a resumption on the progress shortly thereafter.
Merry / happy brother!

Looks great,Tom! keep the pix coming whenever you can. We prebend real wood bindings in the shop
with the same machine we use to bend the sides. You can also prebend plastic bindings with a heat gun.
Wood binding may look nicer to some but, there is much to be said for plastic bindings. They dont dent very easy
like the wood ones can and as I am sure you know the corners always seem to take a bit of a beating no matter how careful you are while handeling guitars. Once again bravo to you and your buddy. :)

Re: And so it begins......

Whul, okay then.... I'll keep up the chronicling. If nothing else this project gives one a whole new respect for REAL guitar builders.... golly gee!! @ Pascal, Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day are only busy in the afternoon, so the morning is for anything I want!! I'll probably be firing up the Dremel in an hour or so!!

@ Toni, you would THINK I'd be busy at work during the holidays but it's actually DEAD SLOW and I've taken TONS of time off!! All I've been doing is playing Santa and running around town and giving gifts and having cocktails and eating food and just having the TIME OF MY LIFE!!! I love this time of year! I hope the rest of you are having as much fun as I am!!

Thanks for the encouragement from EVERYONE!! Y'all ROCK!!

@ Larry..... OMG!! Do I feel like a FOOL or what? Struggling and fighting with that STIFF PLASTIC BINDING and all the while there's a heat gun about TWO FEET AWAY!!! It NEVER even occurred to me!! And NO ONE ever mentioned it in any instructions or material that has been referenced so far!! I have a feeling the binding on the top is gonna be a WHOLE LOT EASIER!! This is just ONE of the reasons to post this project here..... getting sage advice from experienced guitar builders has been invaluable!!

I'll post some pics of the routered top in a bit..... :D :D :D
