This is the routered groove for the top binding. Now we need one just a bit shallower and a tiny bit into the top for the purfling to sit in.

Yeah I do Tom, used it on my 79 D 50 too, and it's an exact match to the original finish... I'm amazed really. I'll toast you tonight Tom, Merry Christmas. Steffan

Top binding and purfling is now done. WHAT A CHORE!! At times it looked like Don was fighting with six live snakes trying to escape and ..... not doing too well in the battle!!! But now it's all glued in and looking more and more like a real guitar.....

Looks great,Tom and a big step done! Its tough to glue in real wood purfling because it starts to swell as soon as the glue hits it!Got to work fast as I am sure you know. Make sure when you or your buddy are ready to scrape the bindings down the the cabinet scrapers have a very good edge on them :)

Re: And so it begins......

Thanks, Larry. Don's scraper has a kick-a$$ edge on it and he keeps it honed and it's made scraping and leveling the binding and purfling relatively easy. I was looking at the headstock and wondering, since I don't have a drill press how it was gonna happen with any degree of exactness, and then I found the old doweling jig that I used back in my furniture repair days and .... VOILA!! Put that thing on (pictured here with the neck) and clamped the back with some nice hard wood to keep the edges of the holes from chipping out and .... we got tuner holes!! Don pounded in the fret wires this afternoon before we had to go meet people for Christmas Day dinner.

Here's the neck with the frets installed, tuner holes cut, and the doweling jig.

p.s. - nice new avatar, Joe!!!

I was away from a computer for the holidays and have only now reread this thread. It's really fascinating to watch the progress. I hope you're still making progress on the build and will soon be showing off the new creation.

Looking good. :D

Re: And so it begins......

Thanks, poser. It's down to more difficult decisions and REALLY tricky stuff..... like setting the neck. Don is struggling with this highly technical portion of the build. Also, do you finish the parts separately? Or do you glue and set the neck and then finish the guitar as a whole? It can be done either way. So if it seems like things have come to a screeching halt.... it's just that this portion of it is very tricky and .... mistakes can really muck up the whole project.

Waiting for divine insight and clarity at this point. More to come......

Well, you know what Guild does, Tom.... both. :) Traditional series are finished with the neck on, and Standard are done separately.
