Today is the 18th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), the 10th anniversary of Layne Staley's (Alice in Chains) death, and today, another rock legend, Jim Marshall (you know the whose name is on your favorite guitar amp), died at the age of 88.

I think April 5th is cursed for rock musicians...

In all seriousness, RIP 3 of my heroes. In honor of Layne, one of the best AIC songs ever, off MTV Unplugged.

Notice the Guild in the hands of Jerry Cantrell, the guitarist.

They had demons yes, this is true.

However if you knew the things they went through, you might be a little more understanding. No, I'm not condoning drugs, I find them to be evil and wrong, but just because they had drug addictions doesn't make them less of a person or musician. I choose to see them for the artists they were and overlook their faults.

Do we disrespect Hendrix just because he was an addict? No, he's revered, celebrated, and respected. What makes him so different? He was influential, but so were the other two I mentioned.

Jim Marshall aside, the other two of your "heroes" were drug addicts, who died by choices they made. I prefer to think of those two as "L-O-O-O-O-S-E-R-S".

Not to be a mean spirited and offend "thin skins", but would you be more surprised if she lived to 80 or died at 48? I think we know the answer.
Sorry, I have absolute no empathy for someone who spent probably tens of millions of dollars on drugs and millions more for treatment, when there are so many people that really need, through no fault of their own. For her sake, I hope she found peace.Tom C.

No thin skin here Tom. Only human dignity when facing another human being's demise, whom had an impact (like it or not) on the Music world, to which I think we're all a part here....The rest is politics or judgmental opinions, and we know where that belongs, or rather does not belong.
If political opinions belonged here, I would say something like that:
And yes, I think we all agree Whitney made poor decisions and had the wrong entourage (as I pointed out in my first post), but going all fundamentalist on her after her death reminds me too much of what's wrong with a segment of the "faith based" population, like this clown calling himself a man of God and standing at an American soldier's funeral with signs claiming that God (rather his version of God) doesn't like the kind of person the deceased was because of his sexual orientation.... What a heart warming gesture for the kid's parents. Not to mention that the kid in question died, to allow this sub jerk to stand there with his moronic sign up in the air.
Done Frono.

Ground hog day anyone?...

Was this necessary? I guess it's hard to have empathy with a flawed human being when you are perfect yourself.

People in the limelight are often judged harshly by the public.
It's like they have to be perfect.
I try to remember this thought.
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

We have lost way to many artists to addictions and mental health issues.
My heart goes out to their families and friends.

I guess that you have to have someone close to you that has had these problems in order to understand what I'm saying.
I hope that no one hear ever to has go through drug addiction or mental health issues.

people always tell me how much cobain sucks as a guitarist and I ask them how many riffs and lyrics have they written that have the same impact that his had.

just because someone plays simple lines does not mean they do not inspire and have an impact. IMHO after kurt died the guitar biz took a nose dive with the younger generation and has not yet recovered.

Thanks for a little compassion. It's not widely understood that addiction is usually a symptom of a real emotional or cognitive problem, and it only compounds it. Yes, a choice might have been made to experiment with addictive substances in the first place, but why the choice was made and keeps being made is the real problem.

"You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were real f***ing high on drugs. The Beatles were so f***ing high they let Ringo sing a few tunes." - Bill Hicks

The words of a true genius.........

RIP Jim Marshall, Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain..... I appreciate everything you all did for me.

Spot on DasBeef! :D :D  :) Words of wisdom most definitely.
You must also include all art work, clothing fashion, make-up, automobiles and yes E=Mc2. Everybody, even genius, has had skeletons in the old medicine cabinet, or other deviant behavior yet they too changed the world, whether still living or long dead!

Indeed. To paraphrase an old saying "Well-behaved people rarely make history". 8)

As far as EVERYBODY, I wouldn't go quite that far, (Frank Zappa's a great example of stone-cold sober genius) but the point's got a lot of validity. Let's not forget the difference between experimentation and full-on self destruction (addiction) either.
