Lets not forget I said other deviant behavior as well. :D
Alcohol is a drug too isn't it? :p :p
Zappa imbibed? I stand humbly "educated".
I'd still guess it was only at the "social" level..but...it is a guess..
OK in an attempt to recover some dignity I'll offer up another example:
Kesey composed first draft copy of Cuckoo's Nest while high on a variety of substances. Then he'd go back and edit for quality while sober.
That concept always stuck with me and I have seen it referred to by other "creative artists".

The closer people get to taking stands on an issue that reduce it to black and white the more likely we are going to have a thread that melts down. Anyone who says drugs, legal or illegal, are always good or always bad is clearly spoiling for a fight and should take it outside. LTG might not be the best place for determining which shade of gray something is either but I'm not quite ready to shut things down.

At my age I require all my faculties (such as they are) to write, learn and function purposefully and well. In wilder days, under the influence of one thing or another, I often wrote late into the night... of course my writing was never as brilliant the next day as I'd thought it was the night before.

Well, in the spirit of tendering an "olive branch of self-correction", I just want to post an adddendum to this interchange:

Actually It's been confirmed to me that Zappa didn't imbibe..but....there I am listening to "Shut Up'n'Play Yer Guitar Some More" last weekend, and what jumps out at me from the inner sleeve? Pic of Frank smokin' a cigarette. So, sure, we don't normally think of tobacco as a "get high" drug, but it is a drug nonetheless and one of the most addictive ones we know of to boot...
He used a lot of caffeine too.
Just sayin'....
