Does anyone have an opinion on switching out the bridge pins in a D40? I am interested in doing this but am not sure whether I might like ebony over bone.

I've put Tusq pins in both my Guilds. Great stuff, and I love the way the "Presentation Style" pins fit. Better than bone or ebony? Debatable. I've not had bone pins, but I have had ebony ones. All will get the job done and IMHO you're down to looks now. Someone I spoke with this weekend swears by brass pins, says they brighten the tone.

A search of the Forum using the search function, above right, yields 847 matches. You should be able to find most anything you want to know among all that information.

The conventional wisdom is that changing the bridge pin material can have a small effect on the tone of some guitars; but not to the extent of changing the types of strings or the saddle material.
So the moral of the story is to go with what looks best to you.

I visited a convent once, and a nun gave me some advice.

So yes, I have conventional wisdom, Miss Bluebells.

I put ebony pins from StewMac in my D40. Looks a lot better than the old plastic ones.
No difference in sound that I can hear.

A friend of mine has brass pins in his Larivee and I swear there's a brighter tinniness to the tone that I've never heard in other guitars. Not overly so, but noticeable.

Couldn't tell you if ebony did anything for mine vs. the other pins I took out since the strings were ancient and sounded awful. I changed the pins when I changed the strings.

Sorry Coastie, I tell everyone not to use search because they'll make you happy if they post threads about end pins.

Pine I think, they'd work ok if you forced about 3 of them, then hammered them in a bit then cut them off with a small saw....  Steffan

No way! Don't cut them off! If you're having one of those days when every note is sour, you can do a Jerry Lee Lewis number on that uncooperative guitar.

Sawed off pencil points work well, been there, found the missing original vintage pin behind a couch cushion a few weeks later. BTW, bridge pins have about as much effect on tone as tuning machines...it's all about looks, IMO.

The item description on that site says: "If you are a tone whore like me, these are for you!"

I dunno about the tone, but they DO match the color of my strings when I decide it’s time for new.
