Today I sat down with the new baby and played it a bunch. I had tuned it by ear at the seller's place and It was a bit flat (but, then you've all heard my singing, right?) Today I took it up to full pitch with a tuner. As it got more string tension it just sounded better and better. Now I'm questioning the need to have it tweaked - at least right away. Not up there with the Martin yet, but I'm lovin' it.

I might try some medium gauge strings on it. Somehow, it's asking me to do this.

Sweet, Dave. Yeah we want to hear about her after she gets back from the guitar doctor!

Looks like he didn't like your D30 Dave?.....

Uhhh.. He's selling one of those Waverly Guilds. Mine was made in Westerly!

But seriously, this guy buys, sells and trades. He gets some pretty nice guitars, cleans them up a bit and then moves them on. I would have been surprised if he had kept it.

Dave, congrats on that lovely.....you might try 'Bluegrass' strings on her. I like 'em. 3 highs are lights, 3 bass ones are mediums...but really...with a guitar like that .....shoelaces would probably sound good...  Steffan

It amazes me how Guild got/gets such nice looking tonewood. I had a G312 at one time (Chaz has it now) and it had the high quality look like this one. Even my new D50 BG has that nice look too. I think you should go ahead and get the setup and new strings. May I suggest the Martin SP lights? Martin light strings fall between everyone elses' lights and mediums. Personally I like the feel and they are durable and keep their tone longer.
Anyway, enjoy the D50!!!!

Thanks for the string recommendations. I've been using the D'Addario Custom Lights on the other guitars, which are kind of like the Bluegrass strings you describe, Steffan. But I was thinking of trying something different, so you've all given me a place to start. I did try DR, which seem to sound pretty good. I'm considering trying the Thomastik, but the price is holding me back.

I took the new D-50 over to my luthier buddy last night. After a bit of tweaking on the truss rod and a thorough exam, it was decided that the guitar needs no additional work. The action was already good, but it's even better now. You can grab a clear, ringing barre chord anywhere on the neck. And not a buzz from top to bottom.

Sounds good, Dave. Be sure to try a variety of strings before deciding to change saddle or anything that might affect the setup then. Hope you arrive at the winning combination without requiring any work!

That's good news Dave! And that's a really beautiful guitar.... It's got this rich looking rosewood like the one on my DV-52, next I drive by your area, I'll be sure to call you first, I'd love to hear that baby sing! :D

I hated to let the D-30 go, as it was a favorite. But a D-50... you all know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean, Dave, I once let an F-212 go and got an F-212XL. I miss the 212 but the XL is so much better. I hope your experience is the same.
