Hello all. I have an x79 project I'm debating on what direction I want to go with it. It has been stripped of its finish before I got it, and was thinking of doing the stripe design.

I did a rescue on a severely abused black sparkle X-79 some years ago. I stripped the paint and because the poplar wood was paper white, once sanded, I put two coats of a cherry stain on it to bring out the grain. I then did a few coats of Formby's Tung Oil Varnish, as I recall.

So, keeping it natural may not be a bad thing.

That looks way better than mine. It looks like someone used a dirty sponge and varnished it lol.

Threads split. Please keep one guitar per thread where possible when the thread is named for that model - thanks.

Yeah, I'd strip it, but I like the natural color! I guess it depends on whether you want the thing to look wild-hair '80s-ish or whether you like the woody look.

Those guitars seem to need a custom color finish. I have always been partial to black sparkle, but they look good in red and blue also.

Just for reference, here's one in Guild's stock red (a candy apple style) and one in straight black (non-sparkle)

An interesting note on the red finish is that the clear coat "crazed" with age, which shows best at certain angles.

This black one below has no crazing in the finish. It is one of the earlier ones when they were putting the "Chesterfield" headstock necks on them. I think they put those on the first 100 or so of the run. This black one is #82.

I used the pickups, pickguard and wiring harness from the "Woody" rescue X-79 to bring this black one back to factory specs. The previous owner had changed the pickups and wiring.

I like the blue burst and your natural color the best.
