If people are honoring and posting a tribute to someone I don't care for, I usually just click to the next thread. I'd walk not only across the street to see her..... I'd Waltz Across Texas Tonight.

One of the prettiest songs ever. Her voice has that lovely ACHE in it that tugs at the heart strings. http://youtu.be/5VG5PnFBk1g

Daniel Lanois did something really special with her Wrecking Ball album. Emmylou is legendary.

p.s. - Craig, thanks for the Tulsa Queen..... what a beautiful song. I haven't heard that one in years.......

I was looking for a song to post, and what an unlikely song it was to find. I would like to add it to my songs if I can find a way to make it sound OK.

Here are links to two early ELH versions of TVZ songs from the David Bromberg radio show in 1970, with him accompanying her. The folkie influence is very strong, her "Tecumseh Valley" I think is stunning, and I always thought Nanci Griffith owned this song.

I have a remastered CD of "Luxury Liner", my copy has 2 additional songs, one of which "Me and Willie", is my favorite of her huge opus. Interestingly I have never seen a youTube of it, and seems to be relatively unknown. Possibly only done as a studio recording.

If we have survived the hippy era, and lived to tell, our tastes might be a bit biased. I can recall my Dad saying he (hated that sh**) when he looked at hippy girls with long hair, blue jeans, and possibly no bra on.
Your Dad must have lived in a different universe than the one I was in. Mine was pretty groovy, what with all those hippie girls with long hair and blue jeans and whatever else they might or might not have had on.

Well to veer just a bit, when I stoop and degrade women by treating them as eye candy and lust objects, I have found I have a stronger attraction to women who are close to my age and have "aged well" than to much younger women who are in my children's generation. I suspect some geezers might see my point as they consider tattoos and piercings. I'd guess it is not a difference in universe as much as it is a difference in age/generation.

On that note, yes he was from a different universe. But I suppose the post-Woodstock generation was a trial for the staus-quo at that time.

Back to Emmy Lou, I give her credit for siezing the moment with a success from her first album that held at #4 on the country charts in 1975, with Charlie Louvin's "If I Could Only Win Your Love":

After that she had an immense cult following and was called upon to play and sing on many other country and country rock albums.

In my opinion she and others were instumental in removing some of the simplicity, dullness, and twang from the country genre. I was not into the Burrito Brothers, and the "reinvented" Byrds attempts to psychadelicize country music a few years earlier.

Emmylou and the Hot Band were able to re-work country and add some of the most tasteful and modernized approaches to some previously dull and uninspirational songs. For her original song writing, her collaboration with Rodney Crowell rendered some of the most fresh, and soon to become iconic new songs at the time. With the outside influences of Chris Hillman, Townes VanZandt, Herb Pederson, Willie Nelson, among others, the EmmyLou Harris legacy without a doubt had impact.

I almost forgot, happy 65th EmmyLou,
Craig

OMG!

From I love her to I hate her. Obviously she is very polarizing.

I must say she is not only beautiful, she sings like a freight train. Definitely in my top 5.
My favorite is one with her and Mark Knopfler, "All the Road Running". Just an amazing album.

Just to show that I am not totally starstruck, I had forgotten all about the Mark Knopfler/ EmmyLou recordings. I refrain to say it, but froggy voiced Mark Knopfler and EmmyLou were an unusualk duo.

Don't get me wrong, I also have a lot of Dire Straights/ Knopfler CD's and have liked this group from the start. But EmmyLou and Mark together was an unusual pairing. Aside from that Kopfler's guitar playing is definately a tough act to follow. Additionally they came out with some great material when that infernal disco sound was all the rage.

That was beautiful, Scottie!! Thanks for posting.....

The pleasure is all mine Tom. The entire album is phenomenal....in my worthless humble opinion of course!! :D

You mentioned Daniel Lanois...here is a great one with him and Emmy. "Hey Emmy...wanna come up here and sing with me?" It really gets going after the drummer removes his hat!
