I'm dealing with some Martin OM G.A.S. and feel somewhat dirty since I am one of the Guild faithful.
Haven't made the leap (investment) yet.
Perhaps the knowledge of others 'round here who've given into temptation will help to assuage my guilt.
Anyone care to admit owning one (or, dare I say it, more than one)?

I'm a multiple Martin owner, having played them for over 40 years, owned them for 38 years. I'm down to 2 at the moment, having traded an 0-18 that wasn't getting played for a NOS D-50 Bluegrass Special. I wanted to try Adi and couldn't afford Martin at the moment. I'd never have Guild instead of Martin, but I sure like the alternate occasionally.

Guild is a lot heavier and the neck a lot beefier. Sounds great though!

Dave

P.S. I have a 1971 D-28 I bought new, a 1999 0000-28H I bought used. I have had a Custom shop (my one off personal order) 00-28H, a 000-28H, an HD-28, an SP000-16R, an 0-18 and a D12-28 in the past. This is my first Guild.

Within the past three years I owned and parted company with a 000-16, D28-12 Shenandoah, a DX model 12er, and a very nice D35. Many years ago I had an old D-17. Nice guitars, all. The D35 was hardest to part with. I traded it to FungusYoung even up for his (now my) DV-52. Both of us feel we got the better of that deal. Its all up to personal taste, I guess. Personally, I prefer the sound and feel of my Guilds.

For almost 20 years I had a Martin D18 that I loved. Now that I have a Guild D25 I don't miss it anymore, & I paid less for the Guild about 2 years ago than I did for the Martin in 1976.

I have a 2008 D-35 which I purchased new last winter. A friend was becoming a new Martin dealer and made me an offer I could not refuse (well below MAP). I bought it sight unseen, but hand-picked by the Martin rep.

For the first few months, I just couldn't warm up to it. It sounded good, with lots of volume and classic Martin tone, but I was tempted to trade or sell. Then, I had it set up for lighter gauge strings, with somewhat lower action (like my other acoustics) and since then it has really become my "go to guitar". I finally peeled the plastic off the pickguard, stuck in the end-pin, and mailed in the warranty card a month ago.

What I like most is how this guitar sounds JUST LIKE many of my favorite acoustic guitar recordings. I can play along with some songs and the tone just matches up perfectly.

I still love my other guitars, though.

I have an HD28 w/adi top, OM18V and a 00015S. Just traded a D18CW towards a baby Collings. The OM18V is a great hog backed OM. I've been temped at times for an OM in rosewood, but the Bourgeois OM has yet to be beat in that department. Martins are great, but they're not Guilds.

I was taken with an HD-28 in the music store a while back and I ended up buying a used one from someone on the UMGF. It's a lovely instrument. I don't feel any Guild guilt about owning it. :) Honestly, I've always felt I should own the best I could afford. In recent years, I've learned that Guild is a significant underdog in this game and they've offered a lot more value than Martin. However, used Martins are approachable (depending on the model of course) and can offer a lot of value too.

Martin has recently released a 17" jumbo this year (in a 12-string in 40-series and now a 6-string in 35-series - the GJ-35E is brand new). They're calling it a "Grand J" but it's really a Guild F-body clone as Martin's definition of "jumbo" is nothing like a Guild jumbo. Anyway, I have to admit to some GAS for these. But, I'm not likely to pop for them as they're a good 30% more expensive than the Guilds on which they're based.

Anyway, I'm a strong believer in finding the best from a broad range of brands. I mean, I still have loyalty to Ibanez and Guild, but I own a Taylor and a Martin too.

Life's too short to get hung up on that sort of thing, IMO.

I only live about 20 minutes from Nazareth, PA so it's tough for me not to dig Martins!

I'm loving Scratch's old D-35. Fabulous guitar!

Also really enjoy my 000-15 (such a sweet all mahogany/small bodied guitar), and the LXM (aka "Little Martin") isn't bad either... though I may sell it since I don't travel so much anymore.

Martin makes great guitars. They've kept the majority of the production in the US, and after speaking to a guy that works there at length the other night, I have even more respect for what they're doing as a company even now. They really give a damn about the guitars they make, and there's an awful lot of pride taken in the quality all the way down the line. You'll likely never see a Martin second out there anywhere. They're strictly forbidden from leaving the factory, although I hear there's a bunch of nice ones around for employees to strum away at on their lunch hours.

Currently I don't own a Martin. I've had two over the years. A Brazilian D-28 and a D-12-20, circa 1970. I sold the D-28 because I wanted money for a ham radio and I liked my F-50 more and the Martin would sell a lot quicker (first day it was on consignment). The D-12-20 was a gift from my brother-in-law who hadn't played it since high school. I leant it to my son who allowed it to be stolen and never reported it so no insurance claim possible. If it hadn't been stolen I'd probably have it strung up with heavy strings and tuned very low to play Leadbelly sort of stuff. It's sound was no where near as nice as my F-212.

Oh my. Is that straight-grained Brazilian on the back of that Martin? Golden Era, indeed. That is the real deal right there. I like it. Can I borrow it? 8)

About 5 years ago I picked up a Martin D35, at the music store, strummed it, and it blew me away, so did the price, around $3500. It was gone next time I came in to visit it, but around that time I did have a few dollars, and was playing with a few Larivees. There was this really lovely L09 cutaway with Baggs pick up etc. I played that one last because it just looked like the prom queen, and I didn't want a broken, longing, heart. But I did play it, and she was the prom queen, and I was lusting with GAS. For kicks I looked at the tag, to discourage any possibility of actually buying it.........and the price was.........was............$1295;........excuse me.! !
I took it to the front desk, and holding it out with my hands underneath, as if I were about to put something on an alter, I said 'tell me about this guitar'......the sales guy said, some one traded it in, and I said, 'on what' knowing I was holding one of the most stunning guitars in the store, sound wise, I was sure....I guess some one just sold it to the store cause they needed money. I gave the guy $20, and said hold it for me...A couple of weeks later I made arrangements to put 25% down, took it home, and we are living happily...me, the Guilds, the Larivee, and a couple of other, neat but unremarkable guitars.
I did love the sound of t h a t Martin though....as good as these companies are, once in a while, every thing comes together to make a stellar guitar, I just think it happened more frequently with Guilds. :D Steffan

I've been playing Guilds since 1968, I'm truly a "Guild" person...but, if a hurricane's coming and I can just grab one guitar it will be my 00-21NY. It's been with me forever; we've aged and mellowed together. It has amazing sound. It's Brazilian. It's a Martin.

Different guitars play different roles. If you've found a Martin that speaks to you, listen. Don't feel like you'll have to stand up at some 12-step program and say, "Hi, I'm Archie and I own a Martin."

Hi Joan:

What great pics! Seems a constant thread throughout the various phases of your life was music, particularly that which was (is) produced by you on your guitar.

Thanks for sharing those personal snapshots from your life... :)

Steffan,

I can't believe that store had $3500 on a D-35!! Wow! Not that I disbelieve you, but it's hard to imagine a store putting what must have been full list price on something and expecting to sell it. Glad you got a better deal later!

Dave

P.S. The D-28 GE is GORGEOUS! That is the nicest, straight grain Braz I've seen on any relatively new Martins in a long time.
