I have identified a new guitar issue, which I now copyright as G.A.V.E.U.P., the acronym for Guitar Accessibility Versus Expense Unilateral Postulate. I am blessed with 3 quality instruments, and they are kept in humidified hard shell cases in the closet of what my wife lets me call my "music room" since that is the only place in the house I could store them.
So when I have 5 or 10 minutes to pick, do I go through the trouble of pulling out, tuning up, wiping down, and playing the '64 Troubadour? The slope shouldered Gibson? The delicious D-55? Why, no. I pick up the uncased,un-humidified $99 Hohner in the corner. Play it for a few moments, put it down, and go back to what I should have been doing. I gave up.

Dave,

Around here, my situation is pretty similar to yours. Nonetheless, today I shared a marvelous time with Louise. It's true that this is not as frequent as it should, but in the meantime, while I don't have enough time to dedicate to her, I can rest assure that she is not exposed to any threats like humidity/temperature changes or any other harmful situation, because she is in her comfy "house". Well, that's how I explain my behavior...

However, it's interesting how, for some reason or another, we don't enjoy our guitars as much as we should. :?

Interesting acronym, BTW.

All the best,
B.

I guess I think I know what you're talking about..... which is why my life is structured as it is. My whole house is a gigantic guitar case. Totally temperature controlled and humidified. They sit out on stands. I have no kids or indoor pets, except an Amazon parrot. He doesn't mess with the guitars. They sit out in the living room and I can grab them whenever I want and play them. Sometimes I throw them on the sofa while a grab another one. It's a good life here. They like it and I LOVE it!!

 I'm all about accessibility.

Dutchmaple Dave,
Storage space and playing time: two significant factors when it comes to guitar ownership and playing. I had a similar situation. I had my Guilds and then I had a cheap little 3/4 size laminate that sounded remarkably good. I did the same as you. I'd pick that up and play it, instead of the Guild. When I finally did make the effort to play one of my Guilds I had adjustment problems. The smaller neck on the little laminate gave me problems when I had to adjust to the larger neck of the Guilds. I just finally decided I should be playing my Guilds, the guitars I really like, more.
Could you put the Honer in the closet, an keep another, maybe the F20 in it's case outside of the closet? If you keep a humidifier in the case, it will probably be keep it sufficiently humid. Then you'd just have to open the case (as opposed to opening the closet getting out the case and then opening it. You've cut your "prep time" in half. :D

Change, G.A.V.E.U.P. to G.A.S.P. (Guitar Accessibility: Solved Problem).

(By the way, I grew up in Guilderland - just East of Albany NY) It's no wonder I'm a Guild aficionado.)

Yup. I wasn't fibbin'.

I only mentioned my hometown because I saw that Dutchmaple Dave was from near there and is probably familiar with the village. Central New York was colonized by folks from the Netherlands. The "Dutch Guilder" was the unit of currency there. So I grew up in the land of the guilders.

I just grab the ES-135 that is on a stand in a safe corner of the family room, or take the D64 out of its case under the bed.

And play them.

I grew up west of Albany in Schenectady/Scotia :)

We have been down this road before but in my house guitars are in a case or in hands. Period. No exceptions. Between humidity, cats and general clumsiness it is "better safe than sorry". Given that everything is in a case, the good guitars get the playing time because if you have to spend the effort to open a case why not open the one you want?

I'll bet you'd have a different problem if you just got rid of the $99 Hofner.
