Is it true Guild no longer distributes it's own brand of phosphorous bronze strings? I haven't been able to find them for a very long time...and I'm bored with the Fender and D'Addarios I've been playing. Any suggestions on strings that I can try that might surprise me?

Thank you,

Yes, from reports I first saw here.

Thank you,
In fact Guild is specifying medium D'A's on the New Hartford guitars. And for reasons I've explained elsewhere I'm convinced D'Addario was in fact their OEM "private label" supplier for at least the early '90's until the early Corona era. (about 2002-03) The D'Addario equivalent for the Guild L350 would be EJ16's with an .025 "G" subbed for the .024.
Otherwise try some of these suggestions:

First, welcome to LTG!

If you're looking for a change of pace, you might want to see if Thomastik strings (hybrid between steel core and silk/steel) float your boat. They're expensive, but really sound different!

I've liked the John Pearse strings on a couple of dreadnoughts.. maybe not for everybody.

Also, if you haven't tried 80/20 bronze strings, those are much brighter (to my ear) than phos. bronze.

Best of luck in the hunt. Finding the right strings is always a journey.

DR Sunbeams are my personal favorite. DR is a smaller niche market company out of New Jersey. Sunbeams really are a different animal in that they are wound on round core instead of hex core. They do require more care in installation, to keep the core from separating. Instructions are on the package. Newtone Masterclass strings from England are also very good and wound on round core as well.

Welcome.

Mark Dronge, son of the founder of Guild, founded DR Strings. They sound mighty fine on my acoustic bass.

I've now put DR Sunbeams on all of my steel-stringed Guilds
and am very pleased. That said, Fred/valleyguy, tried a set on one of His Guilds (believe it was His D50) liked them for the first three days, then mentioned they just died.I guess it's personal preference...or maybe His set was defective.

I put John Pearse 80/20 lights on my f30, and Pearse phosphor bronze mediums on the D40. I've tried lots of others, keep comin' back to these.

Welp, so far as my experiment is concerned, I still have not used the GHS Bright Bronze or the DR Rare's, but if I had to pick a favorite out of the several sets of various strings by various makes, I still go back to the John Pearse 80/20 lights, followed very closely by the John Pearse Silk 610's. In fairness, I did put the 610's on my favorite guitar, so that possibly could sway my opinion, but I do like them.

Thanks to the "Dude", among others, I recently discovered DR Rare's, and allow me to submit them to your consideration as serious contenders in the quest to curb you string boredom. Great tone.

From what I gathered by reading your reviews, they might be a bit on the "bright" side for your liking, but you should definitely give it a try Jim..... Let me know what you think when you do!

I will, but on the other hand, they might sound good on with the songs I strum.

I recently tried the DR Rares on my Tacoma D50. Wow what a quiet set of strings. I usually use D'Addarios or Martin SP PBs. The Rares don't have that initial BRIGHT sound that I dislike on the Martin & D'Addarios, so that was good, but they are just too darn quiet, had too remove them after a couple weeks.

I'm currently working on the DR Sunbeams (Thanks Treem). These are also quieter than the Martins and D'Addarios, but not as much as the Rares.

Guess it all depends what you're looking for in a string. Three years ago I would have really liked the DRs, as I was a John Pearse user, which is also a quieter string. So, YMMV.

The DR Rares? Quiet?..... Really?
Either it's the guitar or the level of alcohol in the blood (speaking about me of course  ).
Because the set I put on my DV 52 is bright and twangy (and lovely I might add), so just puzzled a bit here.

Are you talking 80/20s or the PBs? I used the PBs, definitely quieter than the Martin SP PBs. Maybe they were old?? What were you using on your DV52 prior to that?
