My experience with boiling strings (from a long long time ago when I was very young and broke enough) is that it might have given the strings another hour or so of play, but then would die and get flat very quicly thereafter....

Plain ol' boiling doesn't get 'em hot enough. Y'need a pressure cooker. Mine's labelled "String Sterilizer" so the girlfriend doesn't accidentally confuse it with the rice cooker. (Insert deadpan delivery emoticon here).

I use GHS "Fast Fret." I always wash my hands before playing and use Fast Fret whenever the strings feel like they need some life and "whammo," back to life they come. I have been doing this for years -- electric also -- and strings basically last me until either I break one or just want to change them for that "new" sound....

I think I'll give the "Fast Fret" a shot. Glad to see it works for you. I'm usually dubious about easy application stuff like this, but for the price, it's worth a try. I often play guitar with less than clean hands, though, don't see myself handwashing before each play—that would provide my wife too much amusement. I seldom use a pick and the lower portion of the strings definitely get gunky fast.

I figure I spend about $250-$300 a year on strings.

After all the hoopla, I bought some Sunbeams and Rares. I put the Rares on DV52 and ripped 'em off within an hour. They did nothing for the tone of that guitar. D'Addario's are the only way to fly with that axe. I put the Sunbeams on the Martin D28 and they are going bye bye too. The "G" string buzzes; the guitar has half the volume. I do like the way the round core feels on the fingers, but I need TONE -- and those DR strings just don't do it for me.... I will probably put Elixirs back on that guitar...easy on the fingers and sound very balanced on her....

Do you flatpick, plat fingerstyle, or both? If you're a fingerpicker.....I'd strongly suggest the JP 80/20's if you haven't tried them. I think they're as finger friendly as Elixers, but sound twice as good. .

West,
I finger pick and flat pick. I haven't tried the JP sets yet. I will. Finger friendly is important! We can't make tone if we are fighting the guitar!

Try the John Pearse 80/20 lights....my favorite and very finger friendly....fabulous tone. And I've recently been introduced to John Pearse 610's...a silk and steel.....love 'em. If you're into mediums, I wouldn't hesitate to score some of them either. Oh, JP's are cheap too by the way...try JustStrings.com.....it's where I buy all of my strings now.
