Jeezsh, if everyone is selling their stuff, there won't be anyone interested in buying all our stuff.

I'm down to three now, but could easily get down to two guitars. My other problem is I have 3 old cars, 2 Cadillac Fleetwood's and a Caprice Classic Wagon, plus 2 daily drivers. I know my kids won't want them, maybe my oldest daughter as she is sentimental. Oh almost forgot, I have extra parts to go along, make that plenty of extra parts. I guess I'll think about it tomorrow.

But, on the other side of the coin: no boats, no motorcycles, and don't golf. So what's a couple of vices? :devilish:

Sorry for your friends, but totally get it. I too am at an age when that little pain might actually be it this time. I think suggestions above to leave instructions where to consign them is really good. That way you don’t have to do everything in a rush. In any event, hope things feel better soon.

I've contemplated the same thing more than once recently.

Two things conspire against that.

1. Somewhat reasonable...I'd still like to try a few different models and,

2. Totally idiotic...I love my String Swing wall racks.

Eventually paring down to 5 or so would be good.

I'd keep the D40, F412, F212 and the two JF's everything else can go.

Sometimes it seems wise to me to get rid of those 'too many guitars', and sometimes I see it as a very foolish thing to do...
After all reasonable people are not necessarily right, and you might miss some day great guitars you did love...
I think picking up the best item among a guitar model you have 6 times, or 4 times would be a good start when it has to be done.
Just keep your favorite, and consider selling the one you like the least among them all...

The more I analyze my guitars, the more I realize if you have a bunch, say four or more, and don't have one you gravitate to, you haven't found that right guitar. I've talked about playing one at a time for four to six weeks, but that has changed since I bought the Santa Cruz. Id suggest selling a few nice guitars and going on a hunt for that special guitar. It could be new or vintage or in my case a used 12 year old guitar. This would downsize your collection, and maybe encourage more selling. I see no issue downsizing from 12 to six. Sell six, buy one.

Does it bother me that special guitar has made others less relevant? Sure. It has seriously disrupted my world order. But I could not replicate my experience by buying more SCGC guitars. I've played quite a few. One never got me in the 25 or so years of trying them. These days I don't try many. Can't or don't want to pay new guitar prices.

Not me! I’ve remained very comfortable with 30 guitars (acoustics & electrics) and three mandolins for about seven years, and have no plans to sell. I will leave my daughter information regarding value & sale/consignment options, and she should be able to make the process pretty easy & quick if she chooses to.

As in the recent discussion on string gauges, we all approach the instruments we own in our own unique way. For me, this has been a very long & winding road of acquiring desired instruments, but also intertwined with revisiting instruments I had enjoyed but let go of in the past. To a certain extent, I tend to view this group of instruments as one would a fine art collection. I continue to take great pleasure in handling them & restoring or repairing them as needed - and them comes the joyful bonus of being able to create music with them - all the while hearing notes & passages uniquely through each instrument. I find the variety inspiring & motivating.

It may not apply at all to the next guy, but this just happens to be the way I‘ve come to enjoy my instruments, in a process that has evolved over many years.

Yes, 30 would be acceptable.

Sorry for your loss Richard.
I too am dealing with a unexpected illness. I mentioned on here before that I've missed 90 % of my hearing...maybe more. Also joint, neuropathy.....
Anyways I also have no-one to leave guitars to. I have one daughter who plays intermittent ly, I gifted her my DC1. I may gift her one more because I love it so much.
I find that my issue with selling is the preparation. The proper packing and shipping. I cannot easily do this anymore. I am in a area completely devoid of music stores. The closest place is Tucson and that's about 140 miles away. I cannot drive anymore, and find riding difficult.
I think that selling your extra guitars is something you should do while you can. I would never have expected to be struck down so quickly. I'm 62, so a bit of a shocker. I cannot do any of the things I used to do. Car maintenance, home repairs,....things I've done all my life, and done them to my expectations which are higher than most professionals. Very frustrating!
So, yeah.....sell them while you can.

Man, so sorry. I can still pack and if I was anywhere near you I'd pack as many guitars for you as you could sell.

Good thoughts.

Cupric, that is a different & very difficult situation you find yourself in. I hope for the very best as you negotiate new paths through the coming years. I did want to mention that I’ve purchased one instrument from Rainbow Guitars in Tucson & they were easy to work with. If they or someone else does reasonable consignments (or perhaps an outright purchase), you could have your gear dropped off & be done with it. That is an option I will be outlining with my daughter if she wants to move quickly. Also, a dealer in my area will travel to purchase & pick up a collection - there might be someone similar in your part of the country.

Well that stinks . I lost my mom a bit ago , pops is gunna be 94 still going strong . His sister is on her way out so that will just add to emotional side of things .

After pops goes I will only have my son but his life will just be starting . I’ll have no one else less my guitars and my dogs . 😑

For some cleaning house relieves stress . Less things to worry about etc but just because you think you’re old is no reason to sell the things you love . So enjoy them as they are and only sell them if you don’t want them ! 😊

Well, I want them all Rayk and even more if I could. But, I need to get down to 30 or so. Recently sold a couple high end Guilds and have a few more pending sales so I'm on my way.

Guitars and dogs, a great combination. Not a substitute but a fine consolation prize. Threads like the are a good reminder to enjoy every day you can. The little things we take for granted are the things we can miss the most.
It has not occurred to me to have 30 acoustic guitars. I do need to find my small body I can string lightly when my hands can't handle .013s anymore. Like all of us, I keep thinking I have the time to wait.

On the other end, it is a real pleasure to leave one's number one guitar, and play an other : much stimulation may come out of it...
I may well not have found that ideal guitar yet, but I'm happy to be able to change to an other seriously good guitar and enjoy it. Not sure at all I'd never get bored with that one ideal guitar...
And I sometimes find things that would not have come to me with n°1

Well I can’t say much other than it saddens my heart . I’ll look over your sales if you have something of interest for me I would have to pass unfortunately I just bought new guitar not a Guild which is also unfortunate. 😑

I do love Guilds, you folks ruined me. Lol 😂
