More. This first one most accurately shows the way the color and grain appears under normal light.

This last one shows the grain. The guitar doesn't really look this red except in direct sunlight.

That is a great looking guitar! I can't believe Fender can't find a way to make and sell them.
:(

Yeah no kidding. They're absolute 335-killers IMO. In all my years I've played exactly one ES-335 that made me think "Wow, I'd like to have this". I'm sure there are many killer 335s out there, but I'll tell you what: Every Starfire I've ever played has been an amazingly good guitar. 60s, 70, 80, 90s - hell I even have a '00, so I've played five decades worth, and I've never played a bad one. Unless is was destroyed by excessive mojo, and you can't blame the guitar for that! :)

Mojo isn't that excessive....just enthusiastic  Steffan

I'm applying for being #1 in the row …
Markus :D

No, No, I'm first in line. :D I'll be in NJ in October, any chance you'll be bored of it by then GAD?

Seriously, are red Starfires with an ebony board a rare bird? I have an Ibanez AS200 which is a similiar guitar - put in a TV Jones Classic Plus on the bridge PU & I love that guitar, but that Starfire looks great & so cool.

By what you have said previously GAD, it seems I need to look at the latter Starfires as I can't handle a 1 5/8' neck width, much prefer the 1 11/16' at least.

I can't schedule my ennui! :)

Yeah - mid 90s Starfires and later seem to all have 1 11/16" boards. I'm with you. That's why I don't currently own any vintage Stafires. I love their tone, but the necks are too tiny. The only 1 5/8" guitar I've ever liked is my Guild S300A-D, but I don't play it much these days.

Colored Starfires in general seem to be less common than blond or 'burst. You should see the rumbling when a green one comes up for sale. :) Starfire 4s with Ebony and gold were only made for a short time IIRC - Hans would know for sure. I've been watching Starfire listings for a couple of years now, and I don't recall seeing another red/ebony combo.

A green SF-4 would be sweet indeed, but I have only seen one green starfire and that is a 1961 SF-II currently listed on Gbase for $4595. I'm not sure what a fair price would be, but the most I would pay for any Starfire II would be $1500 to $2000, and at that price I would want to play it first.

I seem to recall Hans telling me after I got my SF that SF-4's were made in small numbers with gold and ebony in the early 90's, but how small I do not know. Only the man can answer that. I am hoping the second Guild Guitar Book covering the remaining years of production will be out soon so we can all have the info.

Wow!

When I picked it up, my daughter immediately said "That one is thinner than your other one". Naturally I dismissed her 11-year-old perceptions as invalid. She is absolutely right though! The '94 is noticeably thinner than my '00. My '00 was noticeably thinner than my '73. Here's a pic of my '00 (left) next to my '73 (right):

I'll try to get a similar pic with the '94 next to the '00

Why not one pic of all three side by side by side, either by year or by thickness? Now THAT would be a picture!

What's up with the red inside the bridge pickup cavity? Don't recall seeing that before.

The pickups are SD-1s. I had some small hope for HB-1s since it's a '94, but I pulled 'em for inspection and they're almost identical to the ones I had in my '97 SFIII. Still worlds better than Fender HBs, but you know how it is when you get excited for the real thing.

Hello GAD,

That's what I expected. I believe you asked me what kind of pickups would be in that guitar and I answered that they should be HB-1s.

Well, that's what they are. These are not SD-1s.

Hope that makes you happy!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
